Hussey, Gallant Among Those Adding Wins On Day 4 Of Canadian Juniors

2019 CANADIAN JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS

A total of five swimmers won their second gold medal of the competition on day four of the Canadian Junior Championships in Calgary, including Patrick Hussey and Eric Brown of Pointe-Claire.

Hussey, who opened the meet with a victory in the 100 fly, won the boys’ 16-18 200 freestyle in a time of 1:53.10 to top Brandon Oswald (1:53.54).

‘’I felt really confident,’’ said Hussey. ‘’I had a good prelim. It was nice to get back on track after a tough past two days. I had a good start to the meet and I want to finish strong tomorrow.’’

Hussey holds a best time of 1:51.85 from the Eastern Canadian Championships in February.

Brown won the 16-18 1500 free in 15:47.72, improving on his previous best of 15:56.01. He opened the meet with a win in the 800 in 8:18.88.

Jacob Gallant, who was coming off a 400 IM win on day three, won the boys’ 16-18 200 breast in 2:19.38 to break 2:20 for the first time.

Also winning their second individual event of the competition was Yutong Wu and Meghan Berrigan.

Wu won the 200 fly on day three, and then claimed the boys’ 14-15 1500 free on Saturday in 16:24.10.

Berrigan topped the girls’ 13-14 200 breast in 2:38.16 to edge out her previous best of 2:38.83. The 14-year-old won the 400 IM on day two in a time of 5:03.23.

The closest race came in the girls’ 13-14 200 freestyle, where Christey Liang of Edmonton Keyano edged out Camryn Stannard of the Nanaimo Riptides by 0.13 – 2:04.19 to 2:04.32.

‘’I’ve had a lot of events this week and I was just hoping to get a best time tonight,’’ said Liang, who had previously been 2:04.66. ‘’I was really happy with that, considering how many races I’ve done.’

Emma Spence of Regina was the victor in the girls’ 15-17 200 breaststroke after finishing fourth last year.

‘’I felt a little nervous after what happened last year when I got touched out for third,’’ said the 17-year-old. “So this year I really wanted to do better. This is exciting. I didn’t get the personal best I wanted in this race but the result is better.’’

She finished in a time of 2:34.98 to top the field by close to two seconds.
