Ryan Held Thinks 3rd Time Would be the Charm in 100 free (Video)

2019 US NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

Reported by Lauren Neidigh.

MEN’S 100 FREESTYLE – FINAL

  • World Record: Cesar Cielo (Brazil), 2009, 46.91
  • World Junior Record: Kyle Chalmers, 2016, 47.58
  • U.S. Open Record: Ryan Held, 2019, 47.43
  • Olympic Trials Cut: 50.49

TOP 3

  1. GOLD: Ryan Held (NYAC), 47.39
  2. SILVER: Maxime Rooney (PLS), 47.61
  3. BRONZE: Tate Jackson (UN), 47.88

Olympian Ryan Held lowered the U.S. Open Record again tonight. After shattering his best time in prelims, he clipped by a few hundredths to win the title in 47.39. Like Weitzeil, Held swam his best time in the event today for the first time since 2016 Olympic Trials

It could happen….In fact if the top 4 can drop about 0.5 off their best at Trials you’re gonna see a sick relay in Japan.

And Pieroni and Jackson at 47.8 also. Farris at 48.0. On top of that — ALL of these guys are going to put in the best year of training of their lives b/c they know there’s no margin of error at Trials. I can’t think of a stronger motivation than knowing there are 7-8 other guys who want to eat your lunch. Unless the sheer pressure and the white water slows them down at Trials — we’re liable to see even faster times from this group next June. It’s very plausible it’s going to take a 47 to make it out of Semis.

Tate Jackson has to be in the mix as well.

There’s like 10 guys in the mix. There’s probably some big names that are going to be left out of the final.

Max Rooney’s time is nothing to sneeze at. Next year’s Olympic Trials are gonna be insane. US and other big market countries really should be allowed 3 swimmers per event in the Olympics.

They do that in track, so should in swimming, too. Unfortunately, the IOC changed the limit from 3 to 2 after ’76 when the US went 1-2-3 in so many men’s events. But the US is no longer so dominant, so they really ought to change it back…

Looks like the switch to Texas is already paying off. His 200m free this week could be great!
