German National Championships: Day 3 prelims recap

2019 German National Swimming Championships

The 3rd competition day presents an extensive programme – the finals will be broadcasted this afternoon on the German TV channel ARD.

Today’s schedule:

200 m Freestyle Women
200 m Freestyle Men
200 m IM Women
200 m Breaststroke Men
200 m Backstroke Women
200 m Butterfly Men
1500 m Freestyle Men Slower Heat
50 m Butterfly Women

The German women’s 4x200m freestyle relay managed to qualify for the Olympic Games 2020 at the World Championships. Marie Pietruschka, Reva Foos, Annika Bruhn and Isabel Gose placed 7th in the World Championships final. Teenager Isabel Gose didn’t swim the 200m freestyle prelims today, she only starts over the 50m freestyle at these German Championships. Gose (born 2002)  took part in the 2019 European Junior Championships and won five gold medals.  Today it was Marie Pietruschka who advanced with the fastest time into the A final (1:59,43).

Fastest in the men’s 200m freestyle was Alexander Kunert in 1:49,05. Kunert is a student athlete at the Queens University in Charlotte, NC, and was very successful as a freshman in the NCAA, Div. 2. He will be  joined in tonight’s A final by the next fastest qualifiers Aleksi Schmidt and Poul Zellmann. Long distance swimmer Florian Wellbrock, World Champion 2019 over 10 km open water distance and the 1500 m freestyle in the pool, will also start in the 200m freestyle final.

Marco Koch was fifth in the 200m breaststroke at the 2019 World Championships with the second fastest time of his career. For tonight’s A final he checked in with the fastest time of 2.13,91. He will swim next to Wassili Kuhn (2:14,51) and Ruben Reck (2:15,48).

Jenny Mensing took the bronze medal in the 100 m backstroke yesterday and was the fastest today in the 200m backstroke heats in 2:15,57. Second fastest was the 14-year-old Lucie Mosdzien in 2:18,13.  Sonnele Öztürk came in with the third fastest time of 2:18,75. Öztürk trains in the USA at the Auburn University.

Daniel Pinneker set the fastest time in the prelims of the 200m butterfly. He reached at time of 2:00,50 ahead of Fynn Minuth and Ramon Klenz.

Aliena Schmidtke led the field with the fastest time of 26,67 into the A final, followed by Lisa Höpink and Amelie Zachenhuber. Zachenhuber will be the youngest participant in the A final, she is 15 years old. Aliena Schmidtke studied and trained for a long time in the USA, graduated from college there, but returned to Magdeburg this year to train with coach Bernd Berkhahn.

Inspired by his victory over 100 m back yesterday, Ole Brauschweig took the fastest time in 50 m back in 25.33. Anton Müller and Marvin Dahler reached the A final with the second fastest time of 25,93.

Anna Elendt continued to swim at a very high level. The 17-year-old was 7th in the 50m breaststroke in 31,06 at the World Championships. She got her hands to the wall with the fastest time of 31,10 in this morning’s heats. Elendt won the title in the 100 m breaststroke in a new personal best time of 1:08,06 yesterday. The next fastest qualifiers for the 50 m breaststroke A Final were Emilie Boll (32,01) and Jessica Steiger (32,13).

Two Jessicas swam the fastest times in the 50 m freestyle preliminaries: Jessica Felsner starts tonight on lane 4 with her time of 25.36 and Jessica Steiger on lane 5 (25.53). 15-year-old Amelie Zachenhuber was the youngest competitor who reached the A final in a time of 26.03.
