Seebohm Brings 100 Back Record To 2-1 Over Hosszu, But Iron Lady Dominates 4IM

Day 2 of the FINA World Cup stop in Singapore was especially explosive, with Russia’s Vlad Morozov firing off 2 series records before the session was over. The 27-year-old first produced his quickest 100m free time this season, taking the event title in a mark of 47.88. That notched the only sub-48 second outing of the field and reset his own World Cup Record of 47.99 logged just last week in Jinan, China.

Morozov’s earlier victim was the men’s 50m back where he again lowered his own record of 24.43 to 24.40, beating out America’s Michael Andrew and Australia’s Tristan Hollard in the process. Andrew touched in 24.66 for silver, while Hollard caught bronze in 25.80. You can read more about Morozov’s impressive evening here.

The women’s 100m back saw Emily Seebohm get the best of Katinka Hosszu in their back-and-forth battle in the event over the course of the World Cup. Tonight, Seebohm brought her record to 2-1 over the Hungarian, with the Aussie touching in 59.43 to Hosszu’s 59.48. That represents the pair’s closest margin over the 3 stops, with Tokyo seeing Seebohm win in 59.44 to Hosszu’s 59.65, while Jinan had Hosszu winning the 1back in 59.65 to Seebohm’s 59.76.

Hosszu did climb atop the podium in her bread-and-butter 400m IM event earlier in the session, reaping gold in a mark of 4:39.76. That was far off her time of 4:32.30 that earned a new World Cup Record earlier in this cluster, but enough to get to the wall ahead of teammate Zsuzsanna Jakabos and Russian Vitalina Simonova, who touched in times of 4:45.28 and 4:52.49, respectively.

For Jakabos’ part, she grabbed a gold of her own in the women’s 200m free, snagging the top prize in a mark of 1:58.40. That held off a charging Michelle Coleman of Sweden, who touched just .34 later in 1:58.74. The duo represented the only women of the field to delve under 2:00 in the race.

Ben Roberts of Australia put up the 2nd fastest 1500m free time of his career to clinch gold in that distance event tonight, hitting the wall in 15:21.58. His lifetime best sits at the 15:15.66 he produced this year at the Australian National Championships. Roberts finished 8th in this event at the World University Games (Summer Universiade) in Naples, Italy, where he punched a time of 15:24.29.

Another Aussie made waves in the form of Holly Barratt in the women’s 50m fly event. Rocking a winning mark of 25.31, 31-year-old Barratt registered a new National Record and Oceanic Record in the event, overtaking teammate Cate Campbell‘s previous record of 25.47.

Tonight, C1 was just .02 outside of her lifetime best and previous record, clocking 25.49 for silver, while Denmark’s Jeanette Ottesen was right behind in 25.92. You can read more about Barratt’s record-setting swim here.

Additional Notes:

• Italy’s Nicolo Martinenghi got it done in the men’s 50m breast, taking the gold in 27.23, just .04 ahead of Brazilian Felipe Franca Silva. Silva settled for silver in 27.27 in the close race, which also saw America’s Andrew right behind in 27.28 for bronze.
• Jamaican Alia Atkinson topped the women’s 100m breast in 1:07.35, .2 ahead of American Breeja Larson. Larson touched in 1:07.55, off her season-best of 1:06.78.
• Aussie Grant Irvine followed up his red-hot 100m fly time of 51.45 from last night with another win this evening in the 2fly. Irvine touched in 1:56.77, with countryman Nic Brown also well under 2:00 in silver with 1:57.20.
• The men’s 200m IM saw Mitch Larkin power his way to another 1:57 performance, this time notching a winning effort of 1:57.43. He is becoming Mr. Automatic when it comes to this event, having set the World Cup Record at 1:57.06 during the Tokyo stop.
