Nicholas Santos Ties Championship Record; Day 3 Preliminaries Short Course World Championships

Men’s 50 backstroke

After winning the 100 backstroke last night Matt Grevers qualified first in the 50 backstroke in a time of 23.28. Brazil’s Guilherme Guido qualified second in a time of 23.48 with 2010 Short Course World Champion Stanislav Donets of Russia qualifying in a time of 23.49.

Women’s 200 backstroke

18 year old Daryna Zevina of the Ukraine qualified first in a time of 2:03.41. Earlier this year Zevina won the 200 backatroke at the European Championships and also won the same event in Doha and Dubai in World Cup competition.

Bonnie Brandon of the United States qualified second in a time of 2:03.41 with Ukraine’s Anja Carman qualifying third in a time of 2:04.95.

Men’s 50 butterfly

Nicholas Santos of Brazil tied the Championship record set by Albert Subirats in 2010 qualifying in a time of 22.40. South Africa’s Chad Le Clos qualified second in a time of 22.78 with Yauhen Tsurkin of Belarus qualifying third in a time of 22.93.

Women’s 100 breaststroke

After having a busy night winning both the 50 breaststroke and 100 IM Ruta Meilutyte of Lithuania returned to the pool this morning qualifying first in the 100 breaststroke in a time of 1:04.69. Denmark’s Rikke Moeller Pedersen qualified second in a time of 1:04.73 with Sarah Katsoulis of Australia finishing third in a time of 1:04.76.

Men’s 400 freestyle

Mads Glaesner of Denmark qualified first in a time of 3:40.89. American Michael Klueh qualified second in a time of 3:41.07 with Ahmed Mathlouthi of Tunisia qualified third in a time of 3:41.34.

“I am taking it easy. The (2012 London) Olympics were the important event this year and I was a bit disappointed about my results there. Now I am back in shape,” said Glaesner.

Men’s 200 IM

American Ryan Lochte who has won this event in the last three Short Course World Championships qualified first in a time of 1:53.31.

World Cup Series Champion Kenneth To of Australia qualified second in a time of 1:53.57.

“I swam my PB this morning (1:53.57). I’m really happy with my time and with qualifying as second, so I will be next to all the medal contenders,” said To

“I guess just trying to match him (Ryan LOCHTE, USA). I’m confident with all my strokes, if I can stick to him I think I can get a medal.”

“You don’t come to a world championship unprepared, you come here to swim fast. I raced a lot in the last few months and I learned a lot through racing. Hopefully that experience will help me here.”

400 IM World Champion Daiya Seto of Japan qualified third in a time of 1:54.41.

Women’s 400 freestyle

Hungarian Katinka Hosszu qualified first in a time of 4:03.49.

Chloe Sutton of the United States qualified second in a time of 4:04.16.

“I was really relaxed for a good race, and I had a lot of energy left for the last 100m. I expected the time to be a bit better,” said Sutton.

“The whole final is gonna be insane. There are so many good swimmers, and it is great to be a part of that.”

Qualifying third was Elena Sokolova of Russia in a time of 4:04.37.

Men’s 200 breaststroke

Qualifying first with the fastest time in the world so far this year was Akihiro Yamaguchi of Japan in a time of 2:03.57. Daniel Gyurta of Hungary qualified second in a time of 2:03.64 with Christopher Burkle qualifying third in a time of 2:03.87.

Women’s 4 x 100 Medley Relay

The Danish women qualified first in a time of 3:53.17. The America women qualified second in a time of 3:53.17 with the Japanese women qualifying third in a time of 3:54.41.
