Adam Chaney is a competitive swimmer who represents the United States internationally. Chaney first appeared on SwimSwam in March of 2015 when, as a 12-year-old, he went 51.42 in the 100 yard freestyle.
Chaney continued to improve throughout his early teenage years, earning the #9 spot on SwimSwam’s Way Too Early NCAA Recruit Ranks Class of 2020 List. Chaney didn’t stop there though, and a year later when the actual list came out he had jumped to #3.
High School
Breaking 21 as a Freshman
Chaney turned heads when he broke 21 seconds as a 14-year-old freshman in high school at the 2017 Ohio SW District Championships. He touched at 20.98, winning the event, and also got 2nd in the 100 free in 46.37.
As a 15-year-old at the 2018 TYR Junior National Cup, Chaney split 19.29 at the end of the Mason Manta Rays’ 200 medley relay.
Ohio State Records
His junior year at the Ohio State Championships, Chaney broke both the 50 and 100 free Ohio state records, registering lifetime best times of 19.64 and 43.27.
2018 Winter Junior National Championships – East
Chaney once again threw down incredible relay splits in Greensboro, on night 1 anchoring both the winning 200 medley relay (19.09) and 800 free relay (1:36.41). The 800 free relay set a national age group record in the 15-18 category. Chaney’s relay heroics didn’t stop there, anchoring the winning 400 medley relay in 42.91, the winning 200 free relay in 19.34, and the 2nd place 400 free relay in 44.48.
Individually, Chaney took the 50 free title in 19.87, 100 back title in 47.86, and was 2nd in the 100 free at 43.67.
National/International Competition
2018 Summer Nationals
In Irvine, Chaney earned 24th place in the 100 free (50.59) and 19th in the 50 free (22.79), earning him a spot on the junior pan pacific championships team.
2018 Junior Pan Pacific Championships
On Day 1 in Fiji, Chaney earned a spot in the A final of the 100 back, where he went onto place 2nd behind American teammate Destin Lasco in a time of 56.18.
On Day 2, Chaney earned his 2nd medal of the meet, touching for bronze in the 100 free at 50.01. On Day 3, he followed with another medal in the 4×100 free relay, leading off Team USA’s winning squad in 50.09.
On the final day, Chaney rounded out his schedule with the 50 free, touching for 4th in 23.08.
2019 National Championships
At the 2019 nationals, Chaney finished 23rd in the 100 free (50.34), 12th in the 100 back (55.03), and 15th in the 50 free (22.64). These finishes earned him individual spots in the 50/100 free and 50 back on the 2019 World Junior Championships roster for Team USA.
2019 World Junior Championships
On Day 1, Chaney swam on the 4×100 free relay in finals, where he split 48.64 on the 3rd leg to help break the world junior record in a time of 3:15.80. On day 3, Chaney swam in the finals of the mixed 4×100 free relay, where he split 48.25 to help USA to gold and a new world junior record in the event.
Chaney won his 1st individual medal on day 4, touching for 4th in the 50 free with a new personal best of 22.40.
On the last day, Chaney swam 2 events, first earning 4th in the 100 free with a personal best of 49.27. He finished his program by anchoring the 4×100 medley relay in a field best 47.94, touching in 2nd to earn USA silver.
