Ryan Lochte Gets a Second World Record; This One in 100 IM

American Ryan Lochte now has two World Records for this year’s Championship meet, equaling his number in 2010. After breaking the 200 on Friday evening in Istanbul, Turkey, he took down the elusive 100 on Saturday in just the semi-finals. His 50.71 broke the 50.76 held by short-course legend Peter Mankoc of Slovenia from 2009.

Lochte once held this record, from 2008 until 2009, but by the time this race rolled around at the 2010 Short Course Championships, he was too exhausted from an intense schedule to win it back. This year, his lineup is a bit lighter, and without having to worry about the 50 fly final (he scratched it) the record went down in just the semi’s. Interestingly, Mankoc’s old record was set in the semi’s of the 2009 European Championships and he took only bronze in the final.

Comparative splits:

Mankoc ’09 22.66 28.10 50.76
Lochte ’12 22.84 27.87 50.71

The two split similarly, though Lochte has a bit better of a back-half than Mankoc did back in 2009 – not a surprise given that he’s the World Record holder in the longer 200 and 400 meter races. He is the first swimmer to unify these three records since Finnish swimmer Jani Sievinen in the mid 90’s: the first man with a recognized World Record in the 100. Just like Lochte does now, at one point Sievinen held all three short course records, plus the 200 in long course.

Mankoc will swim in the final tomorrow as well; at 34-years old, he was 6th in the semi’s in 52.80.

It’s scandalous. Eurosport french version has 2 channels and today they don’t show the finals live! Jean-Michel Blue (funny name), if you have France Ô in Belgium you will watch the finals live with Alexandre Boyon as journalist and Fabien Gilot as specialist. About Fina TV I have already tried during the world cup and it has never worked here in France. And during these short course world championships be careful Jean-Michel Blue it’s only audio live! Great! Swimming with only sound and without pictures! No thanks. Poor swimming fans worldwide and especially in USA, I see I’m very lucky here in France to have 2 channels which broadcast the meet.

Is it official that Ryan gives up the 400 IM forever? I would like to know the answer.

What Ryan does in Istanbul isn’t surprising. It’s just his usual business in short course. I believe Ryan was ready for London. His 400 IM has shown it. The only thing we have seen there is that 4, 6 or 8 olympic gold medals are not so easy to win. Everyone wants to be Michael but nobody else but Michael is Michael. Short course and long course are just 2 different sports. And the opposition is not the same. That’s why I think next year in Barcelona and until 2016, except in the 200 IM, he will struggle to win gold medals on individual in long course. In my opinion Chad le Clos is now unbeatable on butterfly. Yannick Agnel… Read more »

My comment was directed at Liliana, who only comments (negatively) on Lochte articles.

Not really, but who cares. My point was that Lochte over trained and misjudged his taper, but that’s hardly his fault. His coaches should be the ones to blame.
