Fitter and Faster Swim Clinics is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.
Malia Mills of Trabuco Canyon, California has verbally committed to the University of Hawaii as part of their high school recruiting class of 2020.
Mills is primarily a sprint freestyler who finished 4th in the 50 free at the CIF Southern Section Division I Championship meet in 2019 as a junior in 23.63 and 2nd in 2018 as a sophomore in 23.15.
That 50 free, in addition to the 100 breaststroke, are her two best events. While she stagnated a little in the sprint freestyles last season, her lone best time in the 2019 calendar year was in the 100 breaststroke, where she dipped under 1:03 for the first time in her career (though she was 1:03.02 as a sophomore).
Best Times in Yards:
- 50 free – 23.15
- 100 free – 51.76
- 200 free – 1:54.50
- 100 breast – 1:02.95
- 200 breast – 2:22.24
- 100 fly 58.00
This season is Elliot Ptasnik’s first as Hawaii’s new head coach. The women’s team’s best-known swimmer is distance freestyler Phoebe Hines, who finished 5th at NCAAs in the mile last year as a junior, but the team has also had a lot of sprint breaststroke and freestyle success as well. En route to their 3rd consecutive MPSF conference title last season, Hawaii had 3 of the 6 fastest breaststrokers in the league last season, including sophomore Kionna Clayton as the conference champion (1:00.20); and 3 out of the top 5 (and 4 out of the top 7) 50 freestylers in the MPSF last season as well. Both groups will be thinned by graduations by the time Mills arrives.
In spite of geographic proximity (relatively), the Hawaii women only had 4 swimmers from California last season, of which just 2 return this season. The 2018-2019 women’s team had only 1 swimmer from the state of Hawaii.
Mills swims for Tesoro High School and the Irvine Novaquatics swim club.
