FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Fairfield women’s swimming and diving started their Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference slate with a win over Monmouth today at the RecPlex Pool, outscoring the Hawks 189-105. The men’s team put up a strong performance but were edged by a score of 154.5-133.5.

The women started the day with a win in the 200 SC Meter Medley as Alexandra Miko-Rydzaj, Colleen Young, Morgan Hansen and Maria Nitti clocked in at 2:02.59.  Morgan Hansen took home two first place finishes starting with a victory in the 200 SC Meter Butterfly at 2:24.29 and clocked in at 1:06.00 to win the 100 SC Meter Butterfly.  Sara Ostensen also picked up a pair of wins in the 200 SC Meter Freestyle at 2:11.85 and in the 400 SC Meter Freestyle with a time of 4:38.68. Ostensen also finished in second in the 100 SC Meter Freestyle at 1:01.52. Shannon Feeley finished in first in the 800 SC Meter Freestyle with a final time of 9:32.29. She also placed second in the 400 SC Meter Freestyle. Alexandra Miko-Rydzaj placed first in the 200 SC Meter Backstroke with a time of 2:26.95 and placed second in the 100 SC Meter Backstroke (1:06.89).  Colleen Young finished in second twice on the day starting with the 100 SC Meter Breaststroke (1:16.72) and the 200 SC Meter Breaststroke (2:48.82). Rachel Landry finished in second in the 200 SC Meter Freestyle (2:15.49) and in the 200 SC Meter Individual Medley (2:31.07). Maria Nitti placed first in the 50 SC Meter Freestyle with a final time of 27.71 while Samantha D’Alessandro and Emily Holman finished in second and third place respectively. Sarah Scelsa also picked up a second-place finish in the 200 SC Meter Butterfly.

On the men’s side, Austin Twiss, Guillem Perez, Evan Fair, and Ian Nelson won the 200 SC Meter Medley Relay to start the meet with a final time of 1:47.74. Patrick Boyle followed with a win in the 800 SC Meter Freestyle at 8:44.05. Evan Fair picked up two wins on the day starting with a first-place finish in the 200 SC Meter Butterfly with a time of 2:10.61. He then won the 200 SC Meter Individual Medley at 2:10.21. Jordan Rahurahu finished in second in the 200 SC Meter Butterfly at 2:13.64 and placed second in the 400 SC Meter Freestyle (4:13.97). Brendan Finnegan placed second in the 200 SC Meter Freestyle (1:59.76) while Guillem Perez finished second in the 100 SC Meter Breaststroke (1:06.94).  Peter Gori tied for second place with a time of 54.12 in the 100 SC Meter Freestyle and Austin Twiss placed second in the 100 SC Meter Butterfly.

Brendan Finnegan, Benjamin Kebbell, Jordan Rahurahu, and Peter Gori finished in second in the 400 SC Meter Freestyle Relay with a time of 3:36.23.

Fairfield will return to action as they travel to Worcester, Massachusetts to take on Holy Cross on November 1 at 4 P.M.

FAIRFIELD, CT –  The Monmouth University men’s and women’s swimming teams opened Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action against Fairfield on Saturday afternoon at Leslie C. Quick RecPlex Pool.

The men’s team earned their second-consecutive head-to-head victory over the Stags, winning 154.5-133.5, while the women’s team fell, 189-105.

The Hawks finished first in multiple races, highlighted by three individual victories each by sophomore Callan Smith (Hillarys, Australia / St. Marks Anglican) and freshman Tahlia Botha (Cape Town, South Africa / Reddam House Durbanville / Kenridge Primary).

The competition took place in a meter pool, which is longer than the 25-yard pool Monmouth’s teams have competed in this season.

Callan Smith won three individual events, the 100m back, 200m back and 400m free. Smith’s victories were his first of the season and he now has 34 individual career wins to his name.

– Junior Trevor Askew registered two first-place finishes in the 100m breast and 200m breast. Askew now has four first-place finishes on the season and 10 in his career.

– Freshmen Blake Reynolds and Thomas From each won two events. Reynolds won the 50m free (23.80) and the 100m fly (57.26) to increase his season total to four wins. From won the first two events of his career, the 100m free (53.61) and the 200m free (1:59.45).

– Monmouth’s men won the 400m free relay as Reynolds, From, Smith and Ben Yeung finished in first with a time of 3:34.68.

– Tahlia Botha continued the strong start to her freshman season by winning three races. She now has four individual wins after placing first in the 100m breast, 200m breast and 200m IM.

– Rookie Alexandra Ho won her first-collegiate race by touching the wall in 59.71 in the 100m free.

– Sophomore Camryn McHugh won the 100m back in 1:05.40 to capture her third victory of 2019. She now has 27 career individual wins.

– McHugh, Bradie Keelen, Louise Barker and Ho combined to win the 400m free relay with a time of 4:10.91.

– Monmouth did not compete in the diving events, where Fairfield earned points toward their team totals.

Monmouth’s 2019-20 home-opening meet is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 1, when the teams host Mount St. Mary’s at Steadman Natatorium at 4 p.m.
