EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State swimming and diving beat the University of Illinois-Chicago as the teams celebrated their seniors at McCaffree Pool. The Spartan men beat the Flames, 132-110, and the Spartan women won, 169-73
The men took home eight first-place finishes, and the women finished with 11.
“I thought we were very consistent and we want the whole weekend to be about faster swimming. I thought we did a good job of that tonight,” said head coach Matt Gianiodis. “I thought Aidan Farley had a great meet, Madeline Reilly‘s 100 fly was really solid. I thought we dove pretty well today and our relays were pretty good.”
For the fifth-consecutive meet this season, junior Erin Szara takes first place in the 100 breaststroke. She finished with a time of 1:03.10.
Both the men and women took first place in the 200 medley relay. The men finished with a 1:32.84 time (Brett Spires, Phillip Meffert, Michael Schwers and Payton Woods.) The women’s relay (Sam Villani, Szara, Kasey Venn and Allie Heineman) clocked a 1:43.19 time.
Freshman Emma Inch picked up her second consecutive win in the 1000 freestyle with a time of 10:19.31. Junior Aidan Farley also took first in the 1000 freestyle, 9:24.47.
In the 200 freestyle, sophomore Lauren Biglin and junior Weston Youngblood took first place with time of 1:54.76 and 1:40.68, respectively.
Two Spartans seniors took home a victory in the 50 freestyle. Heineman, with her second consecutive win, finished with a time of 24.15, while Woods touched the pad at 20.68.
Junior Abbey Neveling claimed two first-place finishes against the Flames, in the 200 IM, (2:06.79), and in the 100 freestyle (52.74).
Both the men and women finished first in the 100 butterfly. For the women, sophomore Madeline Reilly clocked in a time of 55.57, and for the men, picking up the first victory of his career was freshman Brad Sanford, 50.33.
Farley picked up this second victory of the night in the 100 freestyle, clocking a time of 45.50.
In the 100 backstroke, Villani took first, 56.68, while sophomore Kelley Heron finished second (57.50).
Freshman Sophia Balow finished in first, with a time of 5:02.65, in the 500 freestyle to claim her first win as a Spartan. Following her was sophomore Jonathan Lee taking first in the 100 breaststroke (56.42).
Both the Spartan men and women finished the meet with a win in the 200 freestyle relay. The men clocked a time of 1:22.35 swam by Farley, Woods, Nehemiah Mork, and Kevin Mills. The women swam a 1:35.87 time by Kaitlyn McPherson, Kennedy Truex, Henieman and Chloe Reed.
On the diving side, junior Amanda Ling took first-place in the 1-meter, 278.40.
“It’s nice celebrating the seniors and see them have good swims and I’m proud of them all,” said Gianiodis. “They do everything right and it’s great. They’re all good kids and again I’m proud.
The Spartans are back in action tomorrow as they host Northwestern at McCaffree Pool. The meet will begin at 12 p.m.
