WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University swimming & diving team split a dual meet against BIG EAST rival Villanova on Saturday afternoon. The Hoya men came away with a 175-125 victory, while the women’s squad fell 210-95. The meet took place at the Villanova Swim Complex.

GEORGETOWN MEN

  • The Hoyas got off to a strong start with a win in the 200-yard medley relay and closed the meet by taking the top two spots in the 400-yard freestyle relay.
  • Brett Sherman led the Blue & Gray with three individual victories as he touched the wall first in the 200- and 500-yard freestyle races as well as the 400-yard IM.
  • Drew Carbone and Connor Morikawa each came away with two wins apiece as Carbone swept both backstroke events and Morikawa claimed both breaststroke races.
  • Michael Wheeler cruised to a victory in the 1,000-yard freestyle.

HOYA WOMEN

  • Georgetown overcame some adversity midway through the meet to come away with one of their most productive meets against the Wildcats in recent years.
  • Grace Chen won a tight race in the 100-yard backstroke.
  • Belinda Donohoe just outstretched her Villanova opponent to win the 50-yard freestyle.
  • Riley Fujioka claimed victory in the 3-meter dive with a score of 260.70

VILLANOVA, Pa – The Wildcats hosted Georgetown on Nov. 2 for the first home meet of the season. It was the first competition of the year for Villanova that featured team scoring and the wildcats wasted no time earning points.

The women’s side tallied a score of 210 to the Hoyas’ 90 for their first win of the year, while the men fell to Georgetown, 175-125.

Villanova started out on the right foot, taking first in the 200 medley relay thanks to Kelly MontesiMargaret KleinsmithRayann Jaryszak and Milly Routledge. The group finished the event almost three seconds faster than the second-place team. Villanova also finished third in the event, swimming 1:48.30.

The Wildcats swept the 1,000 yard freestyle, with Nicole Welch taking first (10:21.29), Brenna McLaughlin taking second (10:23.11) and Kaitlin Gravell finishing third (10:25.61). It was just one of five events in which Villanova won the top three spots, the others being the 200 freestyle, 200 butterfly, 200 backstroke and 500 freestyle.

In addition to taking first in the relay, Montesi also earned the top spot in the 200 butterfly (2:01.05), 200 backstroke (2:01.71) and 400 IM (4:19.71). Jaryszak took first in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:06.39. Kleinsmith swam 1:07.02 and took second in the event. Routledge earned first in the 100 freestyle with a time of 51.66, and was part of the 400 freestyle relay team with Abbey BerlocoAnastasia Kontrimas, and Tarryn Els that took first in that event.

Welch also added a first place finish in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:00.70, while Gravell also took first in the 200 breaststroke. Anna TurnerMicaela Grassi and Bridie Dunn closed out the first-place finishes, taking the top spot in the 200 freestyle, 100 butterfly and 1-meter dive, respectively.

Villanova also took first in the 1-meter and 3-meter dives on the men’s side, with Michael Perra scoring 283.04 and 291.67. Michael Ackert was not far behind, registering 271.58 and 261.60 for second place in each event. Stephen Krecsmar won three events, taking the top spot in the 50 freestyle (21.05), 100 freestyle (47.00) and 100 butterfly (50.72). Kevin Geist picked up a first-place finish in the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:55.28.

Overall, the Wildcats had five top finishes, but had 19 finishes in the top three.

Villanova will be back in action on Nov. 15 when they take a trip to Penn to take on the Quakers. That meet is schedule to begin at 5:00 p.m.
