Hali Flickinger Scratches 100 Back on Saturday, Still Has Back-to-Back

2019 USA SWIMMING PRO SWIM SERIES – GREENSBORO

After 2 days of hellacious schedules, US National Teamer Hali Flickinger has given herself a little extra rest on Saturday, the 4th-and-final day of the 2019-2020 Pro Swim Series opener in Greensboro, North Carolina.

After a 200 free/200 back/400 IM triple on Friday (which were all of the events available to her), and a 200 fly/400 free back-to-back double on Thursday, Flickinger will race only 300 yards on Saturday via the 200 IM, where she’s the 4th seed, and the 100 fly, where she’s the 6th seed. Those swims are back-to-back, but she gave herself a little extra time to prepare by scratching the day’s first event, the 100 back, where she was due to be the 7th seed.

Flickinger handles these multi-race sessions as well as anybody, which included on Friday a 4:40.78 in the 400 IM for 2nd place on her final event of the day. She showed this ability last year, and has seemingly not lost it in her new training under coach Bob Bowman in Arizona.

Other Saturday Scratches:

  • After scratching the 100 free earlier in the meet, National Teamer Amanda Kendall has made no last-minute arrival to Greensboro – she is now out of her other 2 events as well, the 100 fly and 50 free where she was due to be the 3rd and 5th seed, respectively.
  • German swimmer Marius Kusch, part of the Team Elite training group in San Diego, is out of the 100 fly, where he was the top seed. This was not unexpected after he missed his prior 2 races, the 100 free and 200 free, as well.
  • Twins Grace and Caroline Sheble are entered in their Saturday events still after no-showing Thursday and scratching Friday, though it remains to be seen if they’ll actually swim. The 16-year olds from NOVA of Virginia are both entered in the 200 IM with Carolina also holding an entry in the 100 fly. Their home base in Richmond is only about a 3-hour drive from Greensboro.
  • Andreas Vazaios is out as the 3rd seed of the 200 IM, and has missed the entire meet. After very good performances so far in the ISL, his absence from this long course meet has been a disappointment.
  • After placing 2nd in the 1500 free on Wednesday, Wolfpack Elite (NC-State post-grad) swimmer Hannah Moore has scratched the 800 free on Saturday. She only lives about an hour away from Greensboro.
