Three Pool Records Fall As Loyola Sweeps Colgate

HAMILTON – The women’s swim team came into Lineberry Natatorium on Saturday hoping their success from the previous weekend would carry over. Though the final score didn’t side with the Raiders, several positives came out of the afternoon meet with Loyola.

In the 200 Yard Individual Medley, Kiersten DalyLauren deTorres, and Beth Caruana took the top three places in that order.

Colgate also saw a first place finish in the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay thanks to Madison SullivanCarolyn SilvermanLucy Bischof, and deTorres. A similar squad also took second in the 200 Yard Medley Relay

In the end, Loyola defeated Colgate by a score of 202-85.

HAMILTON – The Colgate men’s group that split last weekend found plenty of individual success despite dropping the home contest to the Greyhounds of Loyola.

Justin Song and Noah Zeigler finished first and second respectively in the 200 Yard Individual Medley.

A Raider team consisting of Jack Van MeterGraham RussellSegundo Rienhardt, and Camden Koch finished first in the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay. Right behind that first place squad was a Colgate group that featured Cole BlighIan FlowersEhran Hodes, and Justin Song.

Despite these impressive efforts, Loyola claimed a 209-58 victory.

HAMILTON, N.Y. – Devin CroninEmma Schouten and Max Verheyen all broke longstanding pool records, and Loyola’s swimming and diving programs combined to win every contested event during a dominant Saturday afternoon at Colgate.

The men won by a final of 209-58, while the women topped the Raiders by a 202-85 margin.

Cronin set a new pool record in the 100-yard breaststroke, while Schouten set a new mark in the 200 breast. Both broke records which were originally established by Navy swimmer Julia Mason back in 1996. Verheyen’s record came in the 200 individual medley, as he took down a mark which had stood since 2001.

Schouten and Elizabeth Walsh each won three individual events to lead the women, who had the top two finishers in 11 of 16 events. Schouten’s record time of 2:19.16 beat out Cronin (2:22.79) in the 200 breast, and she and teammate Elizabeth Romano had the top two spots in the 500 freestyle (5:19.04, 5:25.67). Schouten (1:57.50), Claire Bowser (1:59.55) and Sarah Abril (1:59.66) finished 1-2-3 in the 200 free.

Walsh had the top time in the 100 backstroke (58.68), 200 back (2:08.22) and 200 IM (2:10.64). Her 200 back time was just ahead of teammate Anne Hayburn (2:08.52) in second place.

Megan Dickey swept the sprint free events for the Greyhounds. She posted a 24.91 in the 50 free, beating out Sophie Jahan (25.01), and her mark of 54.12 in the 100 free edged out Bowser (54.56) in second place.

Emily Koegl and Jessica Stolfi also won a pair of events for the women. Koegl (2:06.68) and Molly Davis (2:11.45) topped the field in the 200 fly, while Koegl (57.11), Hayburn (59.21) and Michelle Lebed (1:01.40) took the top three spots in the 100 fly.

Stolfi won both diving events, scoring 185.85 points in the 1-meter and 191.47 points in the 3-meter. Elizabeth Berta (177.52 points) added a second-place showing in the 1-meter.

Cronin’s pool record in the 100 breast came in a time of 1:03.76. She was also on both of Loyola’s winning relays, teaming with Walsh, Hayburn and Dickey in the 200 medley relay (1:47.45) and taking first place with Jahan, Bowser and Dickey in the 200 free relay (1:39.96). Loyola’s foursome of Hayburn, Abril, Elizabeth DeGroat and Hailey Goodyear followed with a second-place time of 1:42.66 in the 200 free relay.

Romano had the other win in the pool for the Greyhound women, as her time of 11:01.06 beat out teammate Morgan Hall (11:05.67) in the 1000 free.

Verheyen, Reid Hussey and Jimmy Hayburn each recorded two individual wins for the men, who had the top three finishers in every race.

Verheyen won the 200 IM in his pool record time of 1:52.30. He was followed by Hussey (1:58.76) and Josh Walker (1:58.99). In the 100 breast, it was Verheyen (59.22), Jay Venit (59.44) and John Sakovich (1:01.12) in the top three spots.

There was less than a second between the top four Loyola finishers in the 200 free, with Hussey (1:46.64), Matt Voight (1:46.83), Tommy Noone (1:47.14) and Bennett Loniewski (1:47.28) leading the way. Hussey finished the 500 free in 4:49.83 to top Dylan Champagne (4:50.49) and Dean Spicer (4:54.36).

Hayburn had his usual strong showings in the sprint free events, winning the 50 free (21.27, Colin Anderson 21.90, Alexander Chan 22.16) and the 100 free (47.40, Anderson 47.91, Jonathan Brooks 48.12).

Other individual winners were Spicer in the 1000 free (9:58.61, Champagne 9:58.63, Alejandro Basalo 10:03.58), Brooks in the 100 back (52.74, Casey Brown 54.10, Walker 54.81), Jared Copeland in the 200 fly (1:56.64, Richard Kogut 1:57.60, Dylan Maziarz 1:59.29), Mark Boran in the 200 back (1:53.45, Verheyen 1:54.76, Brown 1:59.08) and Zachary Metzler in the 100 fly (51.62, Copeland 51.85, A. Chan 52.93).

In the relays, Brooks, Verheyen, Hayburn and Anderson (1:35.74) beat out Boran, Venit, Copeland and Hussey (1:36.16) in the 200 medley. The foursome of Brooks, Sean Keller, Anderson and Hayburn (1:27.36) bested Copeland, Loniewski, A. Chan and Brown (1:28.35) in the 200 free relay.

Jack Still was uncontested in the diving events. He scored 229.35 points in the 1-meter and 243.97 points in the 3-meter.

The Greyhounds return to Mangione Pool next Saturday, hosting Fairfield in a dual beginning at 12 p.m.
