17-Year-Old Gose Takes German Title In 400 Free With New National Record

2019 GERMAN SHORT COURSE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

17-year-old Isabel Gose already could call 2019 her breakout year, with the German teen reaping 3 individual gold medals at the European Junior Championships. Gose made waves in Kazan in the 100m, 200m and 400m free events with gold, while also scoring 50m free silver and a trio of relay medals.

Flash forward to tonight in Berlin, however, and the teen broke through on the senior level, establishing a new national standard in the 400m free en route to her first senior German title.

After establishing herself as the top-seeded 400m free swimmer this morning with a heats swim of 4:06.01, Gose took things to an entirely new level in the final to top the podium in a 3:58.91 scorcher.

Her outing represented the only result to dip under the 4:00 threshold, as last night’s 1500m free World Record setter Sarah Köhler settled for silver in 4:00.46, while Julia Hassler rounded out the top 3 in 4:01.54.

Gose’s 3:58.91 time tonight overtakes the previous German national record of 3:59.12 tonight’s runner-up Köhler put on the books en route to silver at the 2017 edition of the European Short Course Championships in Copenhagen. Gose’s swim tonight would have grabbed that silver instead, finishing just off winner Boglarka Kapas of Hungary’s gold medal-winning mark of 3:58.15.

Her 3:58.91 time tonight places Gose just outside the list of top 25 performers all-time in this SCM 400 free event.
