American swimmer Caeleb Dressel broke the U.S. Open Record in the 100 short course meter freestyle on Sunday at the International Swimming League meet in Maryland. He swam a 45.69 while representing the Cali Condors in the individual event final on Sunday, which broke his old record of 46.21 from Saturday, which came on a relay leadoff.
The U.S. Open Record is the fastest swim done by a swimmer on American soil by a swimmer of any nationality.
His swim broke the old record of 46.22 that was set by Australian Kyle Chalmers earlier this season at the meet in Lewisville.
Chalmers and Dressel previously co-led the ISL and World Rankings this season with matching 45.77s, but both were done in European-hosted meets.
Comparative Splits:
- Dressel, Sunday Record – 21.83 / 23.86 = 45.69
- Dressel, Saturday Record – 22.06 / 24.15 = 46.21
- Chalmers, Old Record – 22.64 / 23.58 = 46.22
Dressel still holds the American Record in 45.62.
So Nathan Adrian’s American record that he set back in 2009 in Manchester (Duel in the Pool) 45:08 does not count because it was set in a fast skin suit ?
Caeleb bests Prince Chalmers again
Please correct me if I’m wrong. I am a completely amature swimmer and have little knowledge of these things…
I’ve seen a bit of controversy about FINA not recognizing some of the records set in the ISL.
How much of that is due to more turns in the pool? With a 25m pool there are more kick off’s right? Is that an advantage when for swimmers at this level?
Hey Segundo, not at all, welcome to swimming and we’re glad to have you here!
That’s not related. FINA recognizes two “courses” or “pool layouts.” One is 50 meters, which you see at the Olympics, and one is 25 meters, which you’re seeing in ISL meets. So while it is a good observation that times in a 25 meter pool, all else equal, will be faster, FINA does maintain separate records for swims in a 50 meter pool and a 25 meter pool, so that’s not impactful on the FINA decision.
While nobody has said as such officially, most speculation is that the first 2 ISL meets fell on the same weekend as FINA World Cup events, and that’s why… Read more »
Wow! Thanks for the info Braden! Great explanation and great to hear FINA is on board as well as USA Swimming. My son and I have really enjoyed following the ISL. Thanks to SwimSwam it has been much more accessible for us.
Welcome to the party.🏊🏻♂️🥇🐬
