Records Broken as Sandpoint Girls/Bishop Kelly Boys Win 2019 Idaho 4A Champs

The Sandpoint High School Bulldogs are the new Girls Idaho 4A State Swimming Champions, improving from a 3rd place finish at the 2018 meet. Idaho also has a new boys’ champion in 2019, as Bishop Kelley moved up a spot from last year to take the title.

Girls’ meet

The eventual champions from Sandpoint placed 1st in the 200 medley relay (1:54.95) and 400 free relay (3:48.20) while narrowly earning silver in the 200 free relay (1:45.58).

In the 200 free relay, Sandpoint came in 2nd to Idaho Falls, which won in (1:45.15). Both teams were under the old State Meet record of (1:46.76) that was set by Sandpoint last season.

Idaho Falls’ junior Tayla Liddle earned her 2nd-consecutive 200 free title after finishing first with a (1:59.92). Sophomore Kaylee Puetz of Idaho Falls, took gold in the 200 IM (2:14.82) while junior Kate Bokowy (Sandpoint) swam her way to bronze in the 200 IM (2:19.24).

Kaitlyn Shelley, a senior at Century High School, broke her own 4A State Meet record in the 50 free (24.36) and became a 2x champion in the 100 fly (58.23). Senior Mikayla Schoening of Sandpoint clocked a (25.02) 50 free, good enough for 2nd place. Schoening then turned around and broke the her own State Meet record that she set last year (55.45) in the 100 free with a time of (54.66). Senior Anika Rubocki (Bishop Kelly High School) earned herself a new State Meet record by 1.5 seconds after clocking a (5:23.05) 500 free.

Boys’ Meet

Bishop Kelly took gold in the 200 medley relay (1:43.10) after bettering their own 2018 State Meet record of (1:43.36).  4 swimmers broke the 2018 State Meet record in the 200 free with Gavin Dustin of Skyline High School coming out on top with a (1:48.79), bettering the record by over 4.5 seconds in the process. Junior Jake Martinez (Bishop Kelly) clocked a (1:52.03) in the 200 free, earning 3rd place.

Double winners and new State Meet record holders included Nathan Moore, a junior from Middleton High School, and Coleman Sandy of Century High School. Moore earned gold in both the 200 IM (1:56.28) and 100 breaststroke (58.72). The previous records of (1:56.41) and (59.29) were both set by Zach Deal in 2018. Sandy swam a (22.41) 50 free and (49.56) 100 free, breaking is own State Meet record of (50.09) in the 100 from 2018.

Junior Jacob Troescher (Bishop Kelly) swam a (2:00.71) in the 200 IM to earn silver while also taking 3rd in the 100 breast with a (1:02.70). Junior Gabe Machado of Bishop Kelly fought for 1st in the 500 free (4:38.99), barely missing his own record set in 2018 of (4:38.05). Machado also won the 100 back (51.65), this time shattering his own State Meet record by almost a second.

The Bishop Kelly 400 free relay broke their own state record by over 9 seconds with a time of (3:19.82), touching almost 15 seconds before 2nd place Idaho Falls (3:34.42).
