Bulgarian Record-Holder Yordan Yanchev Commits to Florida State

Fitter and Faster Swim Clinics is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Bulgarian national record-holder Yordan Yanchev has committed to Florida State for next fall. He holds records in long course in the 200 free, 400 free, 4×100 free relay, 4×100 medley relay, and 4×200 free relay, as well as short course records in the 400 free, 4×100 free relay, and 4×200 free relay.

“I’m happy to announce that I am part of the Florida State Seminole family. Big thanks to my family to my coach for making this possible. WHEN DREAMS COME TRUE! Now let’s take over America.

TOP TIMES (LCM/SCY converted)

  • 50 free – 23.82 / 20.73
  • 100 free – 51.13 / 44.62
  • 200 free – 1:49.59 / 1:35.84
  • 400 free – 3:50.25 / 4:17.98
  • 800 free – 8:06.41 / 9:04.99
  • 1500 free – 15:58.78 / 15:39.98

Representing Bulgaria at the 2019 World Junior Championships, Yanchev clocked a 3:50.41 in the 400 free final to place seventh overall. Prior to that, he won Bulgarian titles in the 200 free, 400 free, and 800 free, and he also placed sixth in the 200 free at the 2019 European Junior Championships. For some context on his long course times, his 400 free time would rank 12th all-time in the U.S. 17-18 age group.

A freestyler with remarkable range, Yanchev specializes in mid-distance and looks like he’ll excel in the 100/200/500 free at FSU. With his converted times, he’s looking like one of the big last-minute steals of the class of 2024, and he’s coming in not far off of what it took to qualify for the 2019 NCAA Champs in the 200 free (1:34.21) and 500 free (4:16.04).

Last year, Yanchev would’ve been FSU’s #2 200 freestyler, while he would’ve been their only 500 freestyler under 4:25.

Yanchev will join Rush Clark and David Quirie in the Seminoles’ class of 2024.
