Spain’s Euro League winner side Sabadell is to add the fourth Super Cup trophy to its treasury at home on Tuesday when they clash with LEN Trophy winner Orizzonte. The Italians clinched this title once, in 2008.
Women’s Super Cup Final, Sabadell
19.30 CN Sabadell (ESP) v Ekipe Orizzonte (ITA)
Sabadell came back from a seemingly hopeless situation back in April in the Euro League final against Olympiacos (GRE): they were trailing by three goals but a miraculous 5-0 rush in the last minutes earned their 5th triumph in the most prestigious female club competition and a chance to play for the Super Cup once more.
They face LEN Trophy winner Orizzonte – a club with a glorious past and 8 Champions Cup (Euro League) titles to its name, still a record. Their last victory came in 2008, the year when they could clinch their first ever Super Cup (LEN launched the women’s edition in 2006). Their fine win in the LEN Trophy brought them their first European silverware ever since.
Orizzonte has a 1-1 record in the Super Cup finals, lost the historic first edition to Honved (HUN) in 2006 but beat Roma in 2008. Sabadell also fell in its first final, against Recco in 2011, but won the next three though it’s interesting that each match was a nailbiter as Sabadell prevailed by a single goal at the end on all three occasions.
Upon their last battles, it was Sabadell which ousted Orizzonte in the quarter-finals of the Euro League last season, won 9-12 in Sicily and played an 11-11 draw in the return leg at home (this sent the Italians to the LEN Trophy finals which they eventually won).
A year ago LEN Trophy winner Dunaujvaros (HUN) stunned Kirishi in Russia to claim the cup after a penalty shootout – but the Euro League champions sill hold a 9-4 all-time lead so far. This year’s highlighted game kicks off on Tuesday at 19.30hrs and LEN offers a free live stream – for more check out our website (www.len.eu).
