Russia’s Illia Borodin became the first swimmer to clear the European Junior Record standard in the men’s 400 IM on Thursday. The 16-year old swam a 4:03.65 for a silver medal, which also took him under the European Junior initial-record standard in the event that is 4:04.10. His time also broke the old Russian Record of 4:04.39 that was set by Maxim Stupin at the most recent stop of the International Swimming League.
LEN first announced recognition of European Junior Records in 2016, and to avoid the initial records being set based on ‘who swam the first meet,’ benchmark standards were created. These standards have to be cleared before the first swimmer can claim the European Junior Record in those events, and then the record-breaking proceeds as normal.
Male European Junior Records are available to athletes aged 15-18 as of December 31st of that year. Borodin, then, remains eligible for 2 more full calendar years.
Borodin’s swim also broke the old Russian Junior Record of 4:04.23 that was set in 2017 by Eduard Valiakhmetov. American Ryan Lochte is the World Record holder in the event in 3:55.50, while Laszlo Cseh holds the European Record in 3:57.27.
