2019 LEN EUROPEAN SHORT COURSE CHAMPIONSHIPS

Day 2 of the 2019 European Short Course Championships saw multiple gold medalists break national records in their respective events to keep the momentum going from last night in Glasgow.

Marius Kusch of Germany, for example, busted out a lifetime best of 49.06 to take the men’s 100m fly and enter a new national record onto the books. Melanie Henique was equally dangerous in the women’s 50m fly, with the French woman producing a winning mark of 24.56 for a new national standard en route to gold.

Russia capped off the session with a World Record in the mixed medley relay, keeping the nation atop the overall medal table through 2 days of action.

However, there were numerous additional national records broken from swimmers not necessarily making it onto the podium Let’s take a look at more fast swims from nations around Europe at Tollcross tonight.

Shane Ryan (IRL) 100 Back

  • Ireland’s first-ever Short Course World Championships medalist, Shane Ryan made his mark early on at this meet here in Glasgow. The former USA swimmer clocked a big-time mark of 50.45 out of this morning’s 100m back heats.
  • Splitting 24.48/25.97, that 50.45 effort checked in as a new Irish national record. He was nearly the same in the evening semi-final, hitting the wall in 50.48 to place himself 4th for tomorrow night’s final.

Jack McMillan (IRL) 200 Free

  • 19-year-old Jack McMillan brought Ireland more glory by making the men’s 200m free final with his compatriot Jordan Sloan.
  • Before that, however, McMillan made the moves on the record board, cracking a new national standard with a morning swim of 1:43.18. Splits of 49.77/53.41 gave the teen his fastest time ever and a new Irish record.

Valentine Dumont (BEL) 100 Free

  • Although she missed out on making the final, Valentine Dumont of Belgium gave a new lifetime best up to the Tollcross pool in the women’s 100m free. She stopped the clock in 53.36 in the semi-final.
  • Dumont’s 53.36 time (26.08/27.28) ranked her 11th overtook the previous Belgian national record of 53.57 Kimberly Buys threw down 5 years ago.

Anna Ntountounaki (GRE) 50 Fly

  • 24-year-old Greek Olympian kept getting faster as the women’s 50m fly rounds moved along.
  • Ntountounaki put up a morning swim of 25.92 and dropped that down to a speedy 25.60 in the semi-final.
  • When all was said and done, the fly ace produced a lifetime best and Greek national record of 25.51 to ultimately finish in 7th place.

Aleyna Ozkan (TUR) 50 Free

  • Another Turkish athlete made waves, as Alyena Ozkan took down the previous national record in the women’s 50m fly.
  • Overtaking the old mark of 26.52 form 2012, Ozkano got her hands on the wall in 26.46 for 15th place.

Anton McKee (ISL) 200 Breast

  • Following up on his 50m breaststroke Icelandic record from last night, McKee was back at it in the 200m breast this evening.
  • McKee touched in a time of 2:02.94 for 4th place, just .07 away from German Marco Koch’s bronze medal effort of 2:02.87.
  • Splits for McKee’s new 2:02.94 national record, his first time ever under 2:03, include 59.26/1:03.68.

Apostolos Christou (GRE) 100 Back

  • Greek athlete Apostolos Christou lowered his own national record in the 100m back, dropping it down to 50.58 from 50.66.

Umit Gures (TUR) 100 Fly

  • Joining his aforementioned countrymates, Turkish swimmer Umit Gures also notched a new national record.
  • His time of 49.77 came in the 100m fly, where the 20-year-old earned 4th place in a lifetime best. Splits included 23.29/26.48 for his big-time swim.

Richard Bohus (HUN) 100 Back

  • Richard Bohus nailed a new Hungarian national record in the men’s 100m back on day 2.
