Ilaria Bianchi Shaves .02 Off Italian Record With 2:04.20 In 200 Fly

2019 LEN EUROPEAN SHORT COURSE CHAMPIONSHIPS

Ilaria Bianchi has taken another 0.02 off of her own Italian Record in the 200 fly on day 3 of European SC Champs. She swam a 2:04.20 in the final to finish in second place behind Katinka Hosszu’s winning 2:03.21.

Bianchi’s silver medal performance matched her second place finish two years ago at 2017 SC Euros, where she finished in a 2:04.22 behind Germany’s Franziska Hentke who went a 2:03.92 for gold. Despite going just 0.02 faster, Bianchi’s 2019 opening 100 split was nearly a full second faster than that in 2017.

Comparative Splits:

  • Bianchi 2017: 28.37 / 31.73 (1:00.10) / 32.28 / 31.84 (2:04.22)
  • Bianchi 2019: 27.94 / 31.24 (59.18) / 31.71 / 33.31 (2:04.20)

Bianchi’s swim moved her up two spots after a fourth place finish in prelims behind Zsuzsanna Jakabos, Hosszu and Helena Bach, who advanced to the final as 1st, 2nd and 3rd seeds respectively. In the final Jakabos came in at a 2:05.00 to round out the top three.

For the season, Bianchi ranks #3 worldwide. Hosszu’s winning time (2:03.21) is the best in the world this season, and American Hali Flickinger went 2:03.81 during the International Swimming League season. Bianchi should be third, with no one else appearing in the world ranks below 2:05, besides Jakabos, who was 2:04.9 in prelims.
