Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu took home the gold medal in the women’s 200 IM on day 4 of the 2019 European Short Course Championships on Saturday. This win marks her 20th gold medal at all-time at the event, making her the winningest female swimmer in its history. She took the record from Slovakia’s 5-time Olympian, Martina Moravcová. Moravcová won 19 medals at the meet between 1996 & 2005.
Saturday’s 200 IM victory takes Hosszu’s total 2019 SC Euros gold medal count up to four after previously winning the 100 IM, 400 IM and 200 fly. After a third place finish in the semi-finals, Hosszu demolished the field in the final, coming in at a 2:04.68. She finished nearly two seconds before Switzerland’s Maria Ugolkova (2:06.59). Siobhan-Marie O’Connor rounded out the podium with a 2:06.74.
Martina Moravcová was a dominant Slovakian swimmer who made 5-straight Olympic appearances from 1992 through 2008 and captured silver medals in the 100 fly and 200 free at Sydney 2000. Moravcová, like Hosszu swam in the NCAA for her collegiate years, attending Southern Methodist University. In 1999 she was named NCAA Women’s Swimmer of the Year.
Both Moravoavá and Hosszu’s respective SC Euro medal collections can be attributed to their strong versatility – Moravcova who specialized in free, fly, medley events and Hosszu who remains dominant in backstroke, butterfly, freestyle and medley events.
Moravcova’s SC Euro Gold Medals
- 100 free (2002), 200 free (1996/98/99,2000/01), 100 fly (1998,2000/01/02/03/04/05), 200 fly (2004), 100 IM (1998/99, 2000/01/02)

This is not the first of Moravcová’s records that Hosszu has broken; in 2014 she passed Moravcová’s record for most World Cup victories of all time when she won her 106th gold medal. Earlier this year, Hosszu won her 300th World Cup medal.
Congratulations to wonderful Katinka!
