We reported how 16-year-old Matthew Sates had already fired off an impressive 200m IM performance at the KZNA Premier Championships, but the teen was back at it on the final day of competition, this time taking on the 100m fly.
After logging a morning swim of 55.22, the SEAL athlete crushed a mark of 53.84 in the final to represent the only swimmer of the field to notch a time under the 54-second threshold. That checks-in as Sates’ personal best in the LCM 100 fly event, with splits including 25.37/28.47 to give him the win.
Sates competed in this 100m fly event at this year’s World Junior Championships but mustered just a time of 55.23 to place 29th. His 53.84 from tonight, however, would check Sates in as the 13th fastest American 15-16 performer all-time.
All told, Sates wrapped up the following victories here in Durban to end his 2019 calendar year on a high note:
- 200 IM gold 2:03.62
- 100 breast gold 1:03.70
- 200 breast silver 2:17.31
- 50 free bronze 23.76
- 400 IM silver 4:25.43
- 400 free bronze 4:02.98
- 50 breast bronze 29.49
- 100 fly gold 53.84
