NORTH MIAMI, Fla. – Four Boilermakers won multiple events as Purdue swimming & diving was victorious in a combined 15 events at the FIU Sprint Invitational.

Nikola Bjelajac (50 and 100 free), Mallory Jump (100 fly and 100 IM), Jinq En Phee (50 and 100 breast) and Brett Riley (100 back and 100 IM) combined to account for eight of the Boilermakers’ 15 victories.

The 50-yard sprints were the spotlighted events Saturday and contested four times each. The top eight in the prelims advanced to an 8-4-2-1 bracket-style tournament that featured a quarterfinal (8 swimmers), semifinal (4) and final (2). The two finalists in each of the four 50-yard events raced in that event four times. All events 100 yards and longer were contested only once. Relays were not contested and Purdue’s divers did not compete.

Ryan Hrosik (fly), Michael Juengel (back) and Nick Sherman (breast) also emerged victorious in 50-yard tournaments. Bjelajac and Phee both won all four heats while winning the 50 freestyle and 50 breaststroke. Gabi Gomez Treig (3 in 50 fly), Juengel (2 in 50 back) and Riley (2 in 50 back) also won multiple heats. Boilermakers went head to head in the finals of the men’s 50 free, 50 fly and 50 back. Hrosik was also a semifinalist in the 50 free.

Kate Beavon (400 free), Nick McDowell (400 free), Will Schrensky (100 breast) and Maizie Seidl (200 free) also won events Saturday for Purdue.

Riley demonstrated his versatility yet again. The sophomore was a finalist in the 50 backstroke to go along with his victories in the 100 back and 100 individual medley. He raced six times over the course of the meet. Jump nearly duplicated the feat, taking third in the semifinal of the 50 butterfly while also winning the 100 fly and 100 IM.

The Purdue women had at least the top two finishers in three events, including 1-2-3 showings in the 100 fly and 200 free. The men added a 1-2 finish in the 400 free to the achievement of placing two Boilermakers in the finals of three 50 events.

Purdue continues its winter training trip at Pine Crest School in Fort Lauderdale. The next meet is Friday at 4 p.m. ET as Michigan State visits the Morgan J. Burke Aquatic Center for a traditional co-ed dual.
