On the final day of the 2012 Austin Grand Prix, the competitors again were able to, for the most part, coast their way into finals.
The best swim of the morning session probably goes to Missy Franklin in the women’s 100 backstroke in 1:00.85. She’s been pushing a bit harder than most of the swimmers at this meet in the morning sessions, which ultimately will make for a more effective training experience. Franklin also took the top seed in the 200 IM, with a 2:17.55. Karlee Bispo (2:18.58) and Allie Szekely (2:18.76) were close behind; Szekely was actually in the lead until the freestyle, so watch to see if she can turn on the breaststroke leg in the evening and keep pace with Bispo and Franklin in the final which should be undoubtedly quicker.
In the men’s 100 back, Matt Grevers is the top seed after swimming a 55.61. He went out hard in this race put shut things down after the turn. Eugene Godsoe will also be in the final in 57.97, though he should be down in the 55 or 54 range in the evening, based on what we saw from him earlier in this meet.
Former Wisconsin All-American, and National Teamer, took the top seed in the 100 breaststroke in 1:10.38. SMU’s Rachel Nicol, the winner of the 200 breast, will be next to her in lane 5 after a 1:11.07.
Both of the top seeds in the 200 fly also put up respectable morning marks. That’s Bobby Bollier in the 200 fly (2:01.81) to pace just ahead of Tyler Clary (2:01.97); and Canadian Audrey Lacroix in the women’s race in 2:11.52.
Took our son to watch finals tonight…
Karlee Bispo won 100 breast???? Should not be suprised – she trains now with the best breaststroke coach. Good breaststroke helped her beat Missy on 200 IM tonight in the most exciting race of the night. Very happy for Karlee.I was very interested to see Michael Andrew. The kid is so tall – what? 6’2, 6’3” already? I was disppointed with his breast and backstroke technique though. On breast, stays too low and pull is weak; backstroke looks like he is entering water with the back of his hand and his pull is late. The sexy won 200 IM and there was a collective “Ahhh…” from girls section when he showed up… Read more »
It’s pretty scary the things Missy may do over the next 4 years. It’s scary the things she’s doing now.
