CHARLESTON, Ill. – The Eastern Illinois men’s & women’s swimming teams swept both Western Illinois and Valparaiso. The men beat Valpo 153-106 and WIU 145-104, the women won 176-74 against WIU and 131-128 against Valpo.

The men’s unit had a strong showing all throughout the meet. Scott House won the 50 free, 100 free, and the 200 free. Andrew Crouse won the 100 back with a time of 54.84 with Alex Adams right behind him in second with a time of 55.75.

Austin Kueck won the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:58.92. Kueck also placed second in the 500 free with a time of 4:58.01. Alex Adams won the 100 fly with a time of 54.00.

Other top three finishers are, Jarod Farrow with a second-place finish in the 1000 free, Chris Dixon with a third-place finish in the1000 free. Race Archibald placed second in the 100breat with a time of 1:02.30.

Ethan Dolan placed second in the 200 back, Raced Archibald placed second in the 200 breast and Joel Talley placed second in the 400IM.

For the relays the men placed second in the 400 free relay, and second in the 400 medley relay.

On the women’s side, they had a total of six first-place finishes on the day. Jessica Harris won the 1000 free and the 400 IM. Sarah Lohman won the 100 back and the 100 fly. Lily Schafer won the 50 free and Julia Martin won the 200 fly.

Other top three finishers are, Sabrina Chu in the 200 free placing second, Mia Fries placed second in the 100 breast with Rachel Manderscheid right behind her. Karleen Gernady placed third in the 200 fly, Sabrina Chu placed third in the 100 free, Jessica Harris Placed second in the 200 breast and Matti Friesz was right behind her in third.

In the 200 breast Ashley Glesing placed second and Rachel Manderscheid placed third. Ziv Marco Placed second in the 500 free and in the 400 IM Karleen Gernady placed second.

For the relays, the women placed second in the 400 free relay and second in the 400-medley relay.

The EIU men’s & women’s swimming teams will return to action at home on Saturday (Jan. 25) to face off against Lewis University at 11:30 a.m. The Following day the Panthers head to the Butler Invitational on Sunday (Jan. 26).

Saturday afternoon, the Valpo men’s and women’s swimming teams took on Eastern Illinois and Western Illinois at the ARC Pool in a tri-meet. Both sides earned wins over Western Illinois, but fell to Eastern Illinois. Saturday’s event was Valpo’s Senior Meet, as prior to the meet, the Brown and Gold honored the eight members of their senior class.

How It Happened

  • The team of Sophie Morelock (Milan, Mich./Milan), Mikayla DePover (Rock Island, Ill./Rock Island), senior Erica Martins (Hartland, Wis./Lake County Lutheran) and Morgan Markley (Bluffton, Ind./Norwell) picked up the first win on the women’s side in the 400 medley relay, touching the wall at 4:05.73.
  • Senior Paige Wright (Surprise, Ariz./Paradise Honors) had a strong showing in her senior meet, registering first-place finishes in the 500 free (5:21.12) and the 200 free (1:58.95), as well as a second-place showing in the 1000 free.
  • Wright also teamed up with Chiara Robinson (Castle Pines, Colo./Rock Canyon), Markley and Martins in the 400 free relay (3:44.00) to close the meet with a win.
  • DePover posted two first-place individual finishes for the women, capturing the 100 breaststroke (1:07.80) and the 200 breaststroke (2:31.99).
  • Markley claimed top honors in the 100 free (54.76) and came up just .01 shy of a second win in the 50 free, while Morelock picked up an individual win in the 200 backstroke (2:15.17).
  • Brian Daniels (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield East) led the way for the Valpo men with two individual event wins. The freshman picked up the first win on the men’s side in the 1000 free, recording a time of 10:12.81. He later would record another first-place finish in the 500 free (4:55.44).
  • Dominic May (Naperville, Ill./Glenbrook North) posted a second-place finish in the 100 free (48.04) and had a pair of third-place showing as well, while Derek Eidson (Ventura, Calif./Ventura) took second in the 100 fly (54.12).
  • The Valpo men closed out the day with a victory, as the team of EidsonDaniels, senior Austin Scheer (Indianapolis, Ind./Bishop Chatard) and May won the 400-free relay with a time of 3:16.19.
  • In the double-dual format, the Valpo women defeated Western Illinois, 166-86, and dropped a tight 131-128 decision to Eastern Illinois. The men also earned a win over WIU, 134-119, but fell to EIU, 153-106.
  • Martins, Wright, Scheer, Victoria Bain (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton), Tara Lawson (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein), Danielle Richardson (Valparaiso, Ind./Chesterton), Brendon Johnson (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) and Joe North (Germantown, Ohio/Valley View) were the Valpo seniors recognized prior to the meet for their contributions to the program over their time as student-athletes at Valpo.

Up Next

Valpo returns to action next Friday, January 24 when it travels to Mishawaka, Ind. to compete in a dual meet against Bethel. The meet is slated for a 5 p.m. CT start.

VALPARAISO, Ind. — The Western Illinois men’s swimming and diving team racked up five victories as the women’s squad showed improvement in a tri-meet hosted by Valparaiso against the host Crusaders and Eastern Illinois on Saturday (Jan. 18).

“Both teams swam hard,” head coach Scott Johannsen said. “We will fine-tune a few things over the next few weeks to get ready for the Summit League Championships. I am looking forward to big things.”

Brennan Bladel displayed versatility by winning the 200-Back (1:56.76) and the 400-IM (4:16.48). He narrowly took second place in the 200-Free with a time of 1:45.95.

Fellow senior Connor Owens was victorious in the 100-Breast (1:01.61) and 200-Breast (2:16.08). The event got off to a great start when the 400-Medley relay team edged Eastern Illinois with a final time of 3:37.15.

Adam Peterson netted second in the 50-free (21.88) and Garret Kemp almost brought home an individual win in the 200-Fly (1:59.27) but ultimately placed in second.

On the Western Illinois women’s swimming side, senior Miranda Mathus logged third in the 200-Free (2:01.48) and 100-Fly (1:01.55). Mathus claimed second in close 100-Free race touching the wall in 56.11.

Allison Spielman came in second place in the 100-Back (1:02.88) and third in the 50-Free (25.86). In the 500-Free, Alexis Dreyer finished in third place at 5:32.56.

The Leathernecks return home for Senior Night playing host to Truman State on Saturday (Jan. 25) at 1 p.m.
