PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown men’s swimming & diving team defeated Columbia, 186-114, on Saturday at the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center. The Bears won a total of 12 events with sophomore Trevor Labuda (Los Altos, Calif.) breaking the program record in the 3M, a mark that stood since 1989.
“This was a special win for our program, we haven’t beaten Columbia since 2010,” said head coach Kevin Norman. “As expected, the meet started with an extremely fast and competitive 200 Medley Relay and we were able to hold off a very talented Columbia relay. The team looked great this morning warming up, very focused, and we had a feeling this would be a big day for us, but that relay definitely set the tone.”
The day opened with senior Joon Sung (Los Angeles, Calif.), senior Coley Sullivan (Louisville, Ky.), sophomore I.I. Qiao (Naperville, Ill.) and senior Alex Smilenov (Katy, Texas) winning the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:28.91.
Brown took the top-three spots in the 1000 freestyle with junior Michael Lincoln (Palo Alto, Calif.) winning the event in 9:11.43 and followed by freshmen Lukas Scheidl (Mendham, N.J.) (9:24.38) and Kabir Randhawa (Dix Hills, N.Y.) (9:38.19).
Smilenov placed second in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:40.00 while sophomore Lucas Hess (Salt Lake City, Utah) claimed fifth (1:42.04).
Sung registered a victory in the 100 backstroke in 49.10 with Sullivan coming in third (49.74) and sophomore Billy Knaul (Sudbury, Mass.) taking fifth (51.59). Sullivan took first in the 200 of the event in 1:48.92 while sophomore Reid Arwood (Asheville, N.C.) claimed third (1:49.85).
The Bears went 1-2 in the 100 breaststroke with freshman Vincent Huang (League City, Texas) posting the win in 56.01 and sophomore Ben Hayes (River Hills, Wis.) taking second (56.63) while senior Toshiki Takahashi (Tokyo, Japan) came in fifth (58.08). Huang later took second in the 200 breaststroke (2:01.38) with Hayes (2:02.45, third) and Takahashi (2:06.46, fifth) following.
Brown took the top-two spots again in the 200 butterfly, with junior Riley Pestorius (Bridgewater, N.J.) winning in 1:49.19 and Qiao coming in second in 1:49.43. Junior Alex Park (Dix Hills, N.Y.) also added points in the event in fifth (1:52.35). Qiao later won the 100 butterfly in 49.31 with senior Jagger Stephens (Agana Heights, Hagatna, Guam) taking fifth (50.74).
Cline (20.35) and Smilenov (20.67) went back-to-back in the 50 freestyle for second and third, respectively. Cline later won the 100 freestyle in 44.35 with Sung taking third (44.82).
In diving, senior William McNelis (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich.) took first in the 1M with a score of 321.60 and Labuda behind him in second (301.50). Labuda then won the 3M with a score of 354, breaking the school record score of 351.05 set by Charlie Chester in 1989 while McNelis came in third (284.85).
“We were also tremendous on the boards this afternoon,” said Norman. “Will NcNelis won the 1 Meter and qualified for NCAA Zones while Trevor Labuda won the 3 meter breaking a 31 year-old school record.”
Lincoln recorded his second victory of the day in the 500 freestyle, touching the wall in 4:34.94 while Scheidl (4:35.88, second) and freshman Tyler Lu (Pleasanton, Calif.) (4:36.24, third) followed.
Park led Brown in the 200 IM with a second-place showing (1:51.44) while Hayes (1:51.86) and Huang (1:53.26) finished 3-4.
Cline, Sung, Sullivan and Smilenov capped off the strong day by winning the 400 freestyle in 2:58.34.
“Sending our senior class out with such a big win in their last home meet meant a lot to the team, and to see an all-senior 400 freestyle relay of Cody Cline, Joon Sung, Coley Sullivan and Alex Smilenov put a stamp on the day with a win was perfect,” said Norman.
The Bears next travel to Cornell on Friday, Jan. 24 and Saturday, Jan. 25. Diving will take place on Friday at 5:30 p.m. while swimming will follow on Saturday at 11:00 a.m.

Senior Sarah Welch (Beverly, Mass.) led the Bears with victories in both the 100 and 200 backstroke while sophomore Audrey Lukawski (San Francisco, Calif.) recorded a win in the 200 breaststroke. Junior Julia Feord (Royal Oak, Mich.) led the divers with a first-place finish in the 1M.
“Kudos are due to our competitors who came in sharp and ready to go,” said head coach Kate Kovenock. “I am proud of how this team made their way through this afternoon’s senior meet. Racing when you are tired and with the added emotion that we have for our graduating senior class takes a lot. They are a special group and have been instrumental in the improvement of our program in the last four years. We’re ready to take on this next portion of training as we move into championship season in the coming weeks.”
Columbia took first and second to begin the meet in the 200 medley relay before a team of junior Taylor Seaman (Brighton, Mich.), Lukawski, freshman Sage Matsushima (Huntington Beach, Calif.) and senior Marley Cross (Seattle, Wash.) took third in 1:45.21.
Freshman Audrey Orange (New York City, N.Y.) turned in a second-place finish in the 1000 freestyle with a time of 10:13.60 while sophomore Emma Whall (Dover, N.H.) (10:27.14) and senior Julia Armitage (Cleveland Heights, Ohio) (10:28.61) went 4-5.
Sophomore Miku Takabayashi (Glastonbury, Conn.) and senior Amelia Gilchrist (Greensboro, N.C.) went 2-3 in the 200 freestyle with times of 1:52.41 and 1:52.58, respectively.
Welch recorded the first victory for the Bears on the afternoon, swimming to a time of 56.55 in the 100 backstroke while Matsushima claimed third (56.85). Welch later won the 200 backstroke, doing so in 2:01.42 while sophomore Victoria Gong (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) claimed fourth (2:04.39).
Lukawski posted a win the 200 breaststroke in 2:18.43 and came in second in the 100 of the event with a time of 1:04.67.
Freshman Nell Chidley (Mystic, Conn.) paced Brown in the 200 butterfly in second with a time of 2:01.95 while sophomore Caylene Rippon (Hershey, Pa.) followed in fifth (2:05.52).
In the 50 freestyle, Seaman (23.72) just out-touched junior Tory Center (Madison, Wis.) (23.74) for second. The 100 free saw Seaman again take second (51.56) while Cross (51.84) and Center (52.47) went 3-4.
On the boards, Feord took the top spot in the 1M with a mark of 283.65 while sophomore Liv Mitchell (Laguna Beach, Calif.) led the divers in the 3M (258.38) in second place. Senior Emily Zitkovsky (Lexington, Mass.) (242.78) and Mitchell (236.03) followed Feord in the 1M in fourth and fifth, respectively, while junior Marisa Agarwal (Palo Alto, Calif.) added a fifth-place finish in the 3M (233.93).
Orange recorded her second second-place finish of the day in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:59.58 while Gilchrist took fourth in 5:02.14.
In the 100 butterfly, junior Han Nguyen (Los Gatos, Calif.) (55.99) and Matsushima (56.12) went 2-3.
Takabayashi led the three Bears in the 200 IM, coming in second (2:05.08), while Nguyen (2:06.31, third) and Lukawski (2:07.10) also scored.
Seaman, Center, Gilchrist and Cross capped off the meet by winning the 400 freestyle relay in 3:26.34.
The Bears next travel to Cornell on Friday, Jan. 24 and Saturday, Jan. 25. Diving will take place on Friday at 5:30 p.m. while swimming will follow on Saturday at 11:00 a.m.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — In its first road dual meet of the season, the Columbia women’s swimming and diving team earned its second-straight Ivy League victory, downing Brown, 175-125, at the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center on Saturday afternoon.
Columbia advances to 3-2 on the season overall, while Brown falls to 3-4, 2-4 Ivy.
“Brown has a great facility to swim fast, and the Columbia women took advantage of that today,” said Lions head coach Diana Caskey. “It was a great opportunity for the upcoming Ivy Championships here at Brown in February, and it was exciting to pull off such a decisive win in our first away dual meet as well.”
Setting the tone early, the Lions posted a 1-2 finish in the opening 200-yard medley relay with the squad of Julia Samson, Helen Wojdylo, Emily Wang and Audrey Richter combining for a winning time of 1:42.82.
The winning continued for the blue and white, earning victories in the first two individual events as Olivia Jubin took top honors in the 1,000 freestyle (10:10.13) and Jessica He took the triumph in the 200 free (1:51.90).
The Bears notched their first win of the day in the 100 backstroke, but it wasn’t long before Columbia got things moving back in the right direction with a 1-3-4-5 finish the 100 breaststroke. Wojdylo (1:03.86) led the way, while sophomore Yani Le was third in 1:05.22.
The 200 butterfly saw first-year Karen Liu race to victory with a time of 2:01.53. Liu went on to also win the 200 IM, clocking in at 2:03.01. For the second-straight meet, Richter gave the Lions a win in the 50 free, this time touching the wall in 23.42.
Sophomore diver Briget Rosendahl led the way on the 3-meter springboard, registering a winning score of 261.75. First-year Livy Poulin was third in the event at 253.80, while sophomore Michelle Lee took fourth at 234.60. Rosendahl was also the Lions’ top finisher on 1-meter with a silver-worthy 266.93.
“Really strong meet for Briget in both events,” said Columbia diving coach Scott Donie. “With Livy and Michelle stepping up on 3-meter and 1-meter, it made for a great day for the women divers.”
First-year Tina Le won the 100 free for the second time this season, swimming a 51.37. The Bears put together back-to-back wins in the 200 back and 200 breast before Jubin earned her second win of the day in the 500 free, going 4:55.67. The following event saw Wang secure a victory in the 100 fly, going 55.01.
Brown took a narrow victory in the closing 400 free relay with a winning time of 3:26.34, while the Lions’ quartet of He, Richter, Wojdylo and Le were second in 3:26.98.
The Lions will continue their two-meet road stretch next Saturday, Jan. 25, traveling to face the Princeton Tigers. The meet is set to begin at noon ET.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Senior Nian-Guo Liu led the Lions with a trio of individual wins, but it wasn’t enough as Columbia men’s swimming and diving dropped a 186-114 decision to Brown on Saturday afternoon at the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center.
With the loss, Columbia moves to 4-2 overall with a 3-2 mark in Ivy League meets, while the Bears improve to 3-4, 2-4 Ivy.
“Tough day, but it’s not something that I didn’t anticipate,” said head coach Jim Bolster. “I didn’t necessarily think we were going to lose, but I knew that Brown was going to give us a lot of trouble and that we were really going to have to be on and we weren’t and they were. It was their senior day, and their seniors had never beaten us and I think they were pretty fired up to do that.
“There were some close races early on that didn’t go our way and it just steam rolled from there. I wasn’t disappointed with the way we swam, but we just didn’t have enough depth. Brown is a very good team, they were really ready for us today. We don’t have a meet next week so I think we’ll have a chance to recover and gear up for the start of the second semester. There’s always a time in the season where there’s a low point, and it’s how you respond that really matters.”
The opening 200-yard medley relay was extremely tight with the Bears earning a narrow victory at 1:28.91 ahead of Columbia’s 1:28.99, and Brown would open the meet with back-to-back wins before Liu won the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:35.88.
The 100 backstroke would prove to be another extremely tight race, but senior Cole Stevens (49.30) would be edged out by Brown Joon Sung (49.10) for the win.
Junior Albert Gwo registered his fourth win of the season in the 50 free, posting a time of 19.92. Gwo went on to place second in the 100 free, clocking in at 44.46 behind Brown’s Cody Cline at 44.35.
First-year diver Ben Blizard was Columbia’s top finisher on both springboard events, placing second on 3-meter (327.68) and third on 1-meter (279.53). Senior Shinya Kondo took fourth on both boards.
“Shinya Kondo and Ben Blizard were very consistent today and Ben’s 3-meter showing was one of his best performances this season, earning him an NCAA Zone qualifying score,” said diving coach Scott Donie. “Overall a great day.”
Junior Baptiste Leger earned a runner-up finish in the 200 back (1:49.55), before Liu earned his second win of the day in the 200 breast with a time of 2:00.46.
The next race saw sophomore Jonas Kistorp go 49.85 in the 100 butterfly to finish second in the event, and Liu wrapped up the inidivdual events with a winning 1:48.92 in the 200 IM.
Columbia will have nearly two weeks until its next dual, traveling to face Navy on Friday, Jan. 31 at 2 p.m.
