SAN ANTONIO — The University of the Incarnate Word men’s and women’s swimming and diving team enjoyed a solid win over Trinity University on Friday afternoon, with the men besting the Tigers 166-103, while the women notched a 155-117 win.

RECAPPING THE CARDINALS

Ana Lucia Garza and Dawson Martinez swept women’s and men’s diving, with Martinez topping 1M with 363.20 points before winning the 3M with 349.70. Garza dominated the 1M (317.10) and 3M (252.50) with major point margins.

The day’s 100 medley relays brought UIW first and second place finishes on the men’s and women’s side. Seniors Natasha Fung and Devon Dockery got the taste of gold for the women, alongside Mariana Ruvalcaba Cruz and Sophie Taylor, notching the top spot in 50.41. Marissa WattersKristen StraszackerXimena Conde and newly anointed Cardinal Christina Vergara came in second with a time of 53.69. The top finish 100 medley relay for the men saw Jack Prud’Homme, Jon TaylorBryce Kuchan and Christopher Lestage place first in 45.43.

Hannah Rowley showed out as the top UIW finisher in the women’s 1650 free, earning second with a time of 17:21.96, while Alvaro Ibarra knocked out a first-place time of 15:35.38 for a leading margin of almost a minute on the men’s side. Ibarra later took first in the 300 freestyle with a finals time of 2:38.22. Conde tallied a win in the women’s 300 free with a time of 2:57.27.

Conde and Dockery then went one and two in the women’s 150 freestyle with times of 1:22.42 and 1:26.33, respectively. On the men’s side of the event, three seniors (Leonardo SanchezChristopher Lestage and Alex Garriga) swept the podium with Sanchez topping the heat with a time of 1:14.04. Lestage struck gold again later with a victory in the men’s 50 free with a time of 21.40.

In the 50 backstroke, Straszacker earned gold for the women with a finals time of 27.00, while Fernando Ruvalcaba Cruz won for the men in 23.95. The duo came back to top their respective 150 backstroke heats as well with winning times of 1:31.44 (Straszacker) and 1:20.39 (F. Ruvalcaba Cruz).

Oleksandr Karpenko fought a close-packed race to come out on top in the men’s 50 breaststroke with a time of 26.63. M. Ruvalcaba Cruz won for the women with a time of 30.67. On trend with the day, Karpenko (1:30.75) and M. Ruvalcaba Cruz (1:45.19) also took first in the 150 breast heats.

Hector Ruvalcaba Cruz earned top points in the men’s 150 butterfly to win in 1:19.05, while Taylor Steele worked hard but was out-touched for a second-place finish with a time of 1:34.67. H. Ruvalcaba Cruz later touched first in the 100 IM in a time of 51.39. McKenna Stallworth won for the women with a time of 1:03.61.

Magda Vega came in first in the women’s 100 free in 54.18. Dockery touched second with a time of 55.01. Seth Herrmann won on the men’s side of the event with a finals time of 47.37.

Annie Kramer and Bryce Kuchan topped the 50 butterfly competition, with respective times of 26.60 and 23.21.

UP NEXT
UIW heads to the Coastal Collegiate Sports Association (CCSA) Championships in Knoxville, Tennessee, with competition spanning from Feb.19-22. The Cardinal men go into the meet carrying back-to-back championship wins (2017 & 2018), while the women look to extend their reach from last year’s program-best third-place finish.

PRESS RELEASE – INCARNATE WORD

San Antonio – The Trinity swimming & diving teams took on the NCAA Division I University of the Incarnate Word (TX) Friday in a dual meet at UIW’s Barshop Natatorium.

HIGHLIGHTS

UIW’s women beat Trinity 155-117, and the Cardinals men won 166-103.

Mabel Fowler won the women’s 1,650-yard freestyle event and broke two school records in the process. Fowler swam the 1,000-yards leg in 10:14.97 and completed the race in 17:10.11.

The previous marks were set by Melanie Gustafson in 2012, at 10:23.25 and 17:15.64, respectively. Fowler also earned an NCAA Division III provisional time in the 1,650 freestyle. Her time in the 1,000 leads Division III, while her mark in the 1,650 is in the top-10.

Caroline Westholder won the 150-yard butterfly in 1:34.44, edging her Incarnate Word opponent by .23 seconds.

Star Rosales was runner-up in the 50-yard butterfly by .07 seconds.

Spencer Steward was runner-up in the men’s 50-yard breaststroke by .21 seconds.

Daniel Sarman placed second in the 50-yard backstroke by one second to the UIW competitor.

Anthony Liva was runner-up in men’s diving on the 1-meter and 3-meter boards.

Katarina Partalas and Maren Merwarth placed second and third on the women’s low board. Merwarth and Partalas were third and fourth on the high board.

Partalas, Merwarth, and Liva earlier qualified for the NCAA Division III Region 2 Diving Championships to be held February 28-29 In Hixon Natatorium.

UP NEXT

The Tigers will compete in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Championships February 12-15 at San Antonio’s Josh Davis Natatorium. The Tiger women won the SCAC title last year for the 16th consecutive time, while the men were runners-up.
