Williams Extends Lead On Day 3 Of NESCAC Women’s Championships

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – The third day of the NESCAC Women’s Swimming & Diving Championships featured four repeat winners and Williams extended its winning streak in the relays to 29 consecutive victories. The Ephs’ point total in the team standings grew to 1,372.5 points, while Tufts (1,141.5), Amherst (979), Bates (887) and Bowdoin (644) maintained their spots, third through fifth, respectively.

Williams started off Saturday’s evening session by setting a NESCAC Meet and Middlebury pool record in the 200 medley relay. Caroline Conforti, Caroline White, Samantha Kilcoyne, and Gwyneth Maloy combined for a record-breaking time of 1:42.18. Amherst (1:42.91) and Bates (1:43.70) rounded out the top three spots on the podium and all three relays earned NCAA B-cut times.

The Ephs’ Casey Delano improved upon her runner-up performance in the 1,000 freestyle from a year ago. She hit the wall in a winning time of 10:13.27 to win the event by nearly four seconds.

Molly Craig of Williams captured first in the 400 IM for the third straight season, clocking a winning time of 4:19.98. Gabby Smart of Bates and Abby Claus of Tufts followed posting times of 4:24.23 and 4:25.50, respectively, to finish second and third overall. All three swimmers achieved NCAA B-cut times.

More NCAA B-cut times were recorded in the 100 butterfly. Bates’ Caroline Apathy won the event for the second year in a row (54.57). Mary Laurita of Bowdoin, a third-place finisher a year ago, was the runner-up with a time of 55.03 and Samantha Kilcoyne posted a time of 55.24 to round out the top three swimmers.

Tufts’ Mary Hufzinger won the 200 freestyle, reaching the wall in a Middlebury pool-record time of 1:48.77. Teammate Claire Brennan finished second (1:49.36) and Laura Westphal of Williams, the reigning champion heading into the meet, placed third (1:49.38). All three swimmers achieved NCAA B-cut times.

Caroline White of Williams completed the four-year sweep in the 100 breaststroke. She reached the wall in a winning time of 1:02.47 and was followed by Amherst’ Nina Fitzgerald (1:02.82) and Bowdoin’s Anna Roberts (1:04.21). White, Fitzgerald, and Roberts all registered NCAA B-cut times in the event.

The top three swimmers in the 100 backstroke posted NCAA B-cut times, led by Wesleyan’s Caroline Murphy, who won her third straight NESCAC title in the event. She posted a winning time of 55:90 and was followed by Tiernan Shea of Connecticut College (56.27) and Daniela Gonzalez Pinero (56.47) of Amherst.

The final day of the NESCAC Women’s Swimming & Diving Championships begins on Sunday at 10 a.m. with prelim swims. The diving trials are set for 2 p.m. and the evening session begins at 5:30 p.m.
