MIT Men & Women Open Up Big Leads At NEWMAC Championships

WOMEN

Cambridge, Mass. (February 21) — After day two of the 2020 New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Swimming and Diving Championship, the No. 8 ranked MIT women’s swimming and diving team leads the championship with a total of 476.5 points.

MIT leads the field by 183.5 points as Wheaton is currently second overall with a total of 293 points. Springfield is third at 270, followed by Wellesley (241.5), the U.S. Coast Guard Academy (240.5), WPI (238), Smith (174), Babson (151.5), Mount Holyoke (151) and Clark (90).

Day three begins with the prelims on Saturday, February 22nd at 10 a.m., followed by the finals session at 6 p.m. at the Zesiger Athletic Center Pool. The events for Saturday include the 400 IM, 100 fly, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 back and the 200 medley relay.

Friday Championship Results

(Champion earns First Team All-Conference honors, while runner-up is Second Team All-Conference)

200-Yard Freestyle Relay

Champion: MIT (1:33:30) – Shannon Hagmaier, Olivia McGrath, Lilia Staszel, Lindsey Bjornstad
Notes:
– MIT set the pool, school, meet and NEWMAC record in the victory
– Shannon Hagmaier and Lindsey Bjornstad were also on the 2019 winning team, while Lilia Staszel was on the winning team in both 2018 and 2019
– MIT reached an NCAA B Cut

Runner-Up: Wheaton (1:36.40) – Chloe Deubner, Hope Campbell, Margaret Lawler, Caitlin Daley
Notes:
– Wheaton improved by 1.65 seconds from the prelims

 

500-Yard Freestyle

Champion: Lydia Dacorte – Wheaton (4:53.97)
Notes:
– Third-straight NEWMAC Championship for Dacorte and an NCAA B Cut 

Runner-Up: Josie McGuire (Coast Guard) – 5:01.71
Notes:
– Second-straight runner-up finish for McGuire

Champion: Sarah Passilla (Coast Guard) – 2:05.41
Notes:
– Was the 2019 NEWMAC Champion and reached an NCAA B Cut

Runner-Up: Grace Moore (Springfield) – 2:06.52
Notes:
– Improved by 1.09 seconds from prelims

Three-Meter Diving

Champion: Deborah Wen (MIT) – 526.85 points

Notes:
– Was the 2019 NEWMAC Champion, improving by 1.80 points from 2019

Runner-Up: Blake Zhou (MIT) – 517.75 points
– Was the NEWMAC runner-up in both 2018 and 2019

 

400-Yard Medley Relay

Champion: MIT (3:46.07) – Laura Rosado, Edenna Chen, Hannah Mahaffey, Shannon Hagmaier
Notes:
– Mahaffey was also on the 2018 and 2019 Championship Team, while Hagmaier was on the 2019 Championship Team.
– Both MIT and Wheaton reached NCAA B Cut times

Runner-Up: Wheaton (3:51.40) – Chloe Deubner, Madeline Eller, Lydia Dacorte, Hope Campbell
Notes:
– Dacorte has been on the runner-up team in 2017 and 2018

MEN

Cambridge, Mass. (February 21) — After day two of the 2020 New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Swimming and Diving Championship, the No. 4 ranked MIT men’s swimming and diving team leads the championship with a total of 519 points.

MIT leads the field by 119 points as the U.S. Coast Guard Academy is currently second overall with a total of 400 points. WPI is third at 300, followed by Springfield (226), Babson (216), Wheaton (188) and Clark (148).

Day three begins with the prelims on Saturday, February 22nd at 10 a.m., followed by the finals session at 6 p.m. at the Zesiger Athletic Center Pool. The events for Saturday include the 400 IM, 100 fly, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 back, three-meter diving and the 200 medley relay.

Champion: MIT (1:19.98) – Sam Ubellacker, Justin Liu, Emilio Sison, Kyri Chen
Notes:
– MIT set the pool and meet record in the victory, which was MIT’s fourth straight in the event
– Ubellacker, Liu, Sison and Chen (MIT) were all on the 2019 championship team, while Ubellacker was also on the winning team in 2018
– Both MIT and Coast Guard posted NCAA B Cut times 

Runner-Up: Coast Guard (1:21.59) – Daniel Jenkins, Joseph Rodriguez, Tyler Dominick, Devin McClure)
Notes: Jenkins, Rodriguez and Dominick were also runner-up in 2019

 

500-Yard Freestyle

Champion: Trevor Carter – MIT (4:30.18)
Notes:
– NCAA B Cut
– Carter and McClure were tied at the halfway mark with a time of 2:13.65

Runner-Up: Devin McClure – Coast Guard (4:32.39)
Notes:
– NCAA B Cut
– Was the 2019 NEWMAC Champion
– James Chan (Springfield) also reached an NCAA B Cut

200-Yard IM

Champion: Bouke Edskes – MIT (1:49.12)
Notes:
– Four-time NEWMAC Champion, NCAA B Cut, set the meet record in the prelims at 1:48.46 

Runner-Up: Jordan Ren – MIT (1:49.46)
Notes:
– NCAA B Cut
– David He (MIT) and Christian Lower (CGA) also reached NCAA B Cuts

 

50-Yard Freestyle

Champion: Joseph Rodriguez – Coast Guard (20.04)
Notes:
– Was the 2018 NEWMAC Champion and the 2019 NEWMAC runner-up
– NCAA B Cut

Runner-Up: Sam Ubellacker – MIT (20.28)
Notes:
– Was the 2019 NEWMAC Champion
– Reached an NCAA B Cut and broke the meet record in the prelims with a time of 20.00. The previous record was held by his brother, Wyatt Ubellacker (MIT).
– Kyri Chen (MIT) and Aaron Huynh (Babson) also reached NCAA B Cuts

Champion: MIT (3:15.86) – Adam Janicki, Jordan Ren, Bouke Edskes, Sam Ubellacker
Notes:
