MIT Men & Women Continue To Lead Heading Into Final Day Of NEWMAC Champs

WOMEN

Cambridge, Mass. (February 22) — After day three of the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Swimming and Diving Championship, the No. 6 ranked MIT women’s swimming and diving team continues to lead as the Engineers now have 905.50 points overall.

MIT leads the field by 323.50 points as Wheaton College is second with 582 points. Wellesley sits in third at 466.50 along with WPI in fourth (448), Springfield in fifth (413), Coast Guard in sixth (355.50), Babson in seventh (248.50), Smith in eighth (233), Mount Holyoke in ninth (183) and Clark in tenth (122).

The final day begins with the prelims on Sunday, February 25th at 10 a.m., followed by the finals session at 6 p.m. at the Zesiger Athletic Center Pool. The events for Sunday include the 1650 free, the 200 back, the 100 free, the 200-breast, the 200 fly, one-meter diving and the 400 freestyle relay.

Champion: Josie McGuire – Coast Guard, 4:28.92 (NCAA B Cut, improved 4.10 seconds from prelims)

Runner-Up: Laura Rosado – MIT, 4:30.49 (NCAA B Cut, improved 4.39 seconds from prelims)

 

100 Fly

Champion: Jessica Wegner – Wellesley, 55.57 (NCAA B Cut, 2019 Champion, improved 1.01 seconds from prelims)

Runner-Up: Hannah Mahaffey – MIT, 55.88 (NCAA B Cut, improved 1.13 seconds from prelims)

 

200 Free

Champion: Lydia DaCorte – Wheaton, 1:49.61 (Meet Record, NEWMAC Open Record, NCAA B Cut, Runner Up in 2018)

Runner-Up: Hannah May – Wellesley, 1:53.63 (Placed Third Last Year)

 

100 Breast

Champion: Edenna Chen – MIT, 1:02.29 (Meet Record, NCAA B Cut)

Runner-Up: Sara Nicholas – MIT, 1:03.45 (NCAA B Cut, 2019 Champion)

(Madeline Eller from Wheaton (1:03.62) also achieved an NCAA B Cut)

 

100 Back

Champion: Laura Rosado – MIT, 56.46 (NCAA B Cut, improved by 1.00 seconds from prelims, 2019 Champion)

Runner-Up: Grace Moore – Springfield, 57.33

 

200 Medley Relay

Champion: MIT, 1:43.25 (Nanette Wu, Edenna Chen, Olivia McGrath, Lilia Staszel)

MEN

Cambridge, Mass. (February 22) — After day three of the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Swimming and Diving Championship, the No. 4 ranked MIT men’s swimming and diving team continues to lead as the Engineers now have 1041 points overall.

MIT leads the field by 257 points as the U.S. Coast Guard Academy currently sits in second place with 784 points. WPI is third at 574, followed by Springfield (373), Babson (348), Wheaton (318) and Clark (213).

The final day begins with the prelims on Sunday, February 25th at 10 a.m., followed by the finals session at 6 p.m. at the Zesiger Athletic Center Pool. The events for Sunday include the 1650-free, the 200-back, the 100-free, the 200-breast, the 200-fly and the 400-freestyle relay.

(Christian Lower from Coast Guard (3:58.45) also reached an NCAA B Cut)

 

100 Fly

Champion: Sam Ubellacker – MIT, 48.51 (NCAA B Cut)

Runner-Up: Tucker Besch – WPI, 48.94 (NCAA B Cut)

 

200 Free

Champion: Alex Ellison – MIT, 1:38.95 (NCAA B Cut, Just 0.03-seconds shy of Meet Record, 2019 Champion)

Runner-Up: Devin McClure – Coast Guard, 1:39.27 (NCAA B Cut, 2019 Runner-Up)

 

100 Breast

Champion: Eric Fuhs – Coast Guard, 55.82 (NCAA B Cut, Won three consecutive 100 breast NEWMAC titles)

Runner-Up: Kyri Chen – MIT, 56.38

 

100 Back

Champion: Jaya Kambhampaty, MIT – 49.25 (NCAA B Cut, Finished fourth in 2019)

Runner-Up: Sidney Williams, WPI – 49.29 (NCAA B Cut, Finished seventh in 2019)

(Adam Janicki from MIT (49.91) also achieved an NCAA B Cut)

 

Three-Meter Diving

Champion: Jay Lang MIT, 587.30 Points (Regional Cut, 2019 Champion, Broke Meet & Open NEWMAC Records with his score of 605.10 during prelims this morning)

Runner-Up: Connor Pennington – Springfield, 583.05 Points (Regional Cut, 2019 Runner Up)

(Sean Andrews from Springfield (470.45) also registered a regional qualifying score)

 

200 Medley Relay

Champion: MIT, 1:28.51 (Henry Hu, Kyri Chen, Bouke Edskes, Sam Ubellacker)
