Things should remain close between Ohio State and Indiana, but the Hoosiers have a slight edge with 21 scorers to Ohio State's 17. Current photo via Ohio State Athletics
The 2020 men’s Big Ten Championships continued this morning with prelims of the 400 IM, 200 free, 100 fly, 100 back, and 100 breast. Last night, Michigan took a big lead in the scoring, while Ohio State moved ahead of Indiana for 2nd. The Wolverines should extend their lead tonight, thanks largely in part to their dominant performance in the 400 IM, where they landed 5 championship finalists. They have 11 A finalists and 21 total scorers.
Things should remain close between Ohio State and Indiana, but the Hoosiers have a slight edge with 21 scorers to Ohio State’s 17. Penn State, Minnesota, and Northwestern are all chasing down Purdue for a top 5 spot. Northwestern has the most scorers among them with 12 to Penn State’s 11. Minnesota has only 8 scorers, but they’re the only one of those teams with multiple championship finalists (3). Purdue only has 5 finalists tonight.
*NOTE: This report does not include relays or diving.*
For those unfamiliar with swimming terminology, the concept of “Ups” and “Downs” is a good way to track which teams performed best at prelims. In prelims, swimmers qualify for one of three finals heats: the top 8 finishers make the A final, places 9 through 16 the B final and places 17 through 24 the C final. In finals, swimmers are locked into their respective final, meaning a swimmer in the B heat (spots 9-16) can only place as high as 9th or as low as 16th, even if they put up the fastest or slowest time of any heat in the final.
With that in mind, we’ll be tracking “Ups” and “Downs” after each prelims session. “Up” refers to swimmers in the A final, and “Downs” to swimmers in the B final. At the Pac-12 men’s meet, only the A and B finals are scored.

MSU has the swimmer in the c final for fly instead of Michigan.
So surprising, in the past there was no need to pay attention to the ”St’ after Michigan. So Sparty is 1/0/1 then today. Best day since three heats were scored.

BAHAHAHAHAHA Iowa is approaching MIch St. levels of bad. How does Iowa coach make 200k a year, not including benefits? He must have some dirt on people in the department, my goodness.
I have no affiliation with the program, but when I was being recruited 6 years ago, the Iowa head coach was the most respectable and kind people I’ve ever met. Doesn’t speak to his coaching abilities but does speak to his character
Dig deeper than just a recruiting weekend (when everyone is on their best behavior). Look at the amount of good assistant coaches who have left after short stints.
The program (along with the University of Iowa Athletic Department under Gary Barta) has some significant problems.
The Head Coach’s narcissism is only one of the main issues.

FWIW — Michigan has 21 swims, not 22. Tallied an extra in the ‘C’. Should be 11/6/4.
I’m with you! Awesome morning by the Badgers with 7 A finals and 15 swims coming back tonight, and no mention how they probably solidified a 4th place.
Absolutely nothing against them. They’re pretty locked in at 4th. The intro paragraphs are mostly just to highlight who is winning and what teams may potentially see a shift in placement tonight.

Hey, at least Purdue had more qualifiers than MSU. That’s kind of something

They did better than Purdue. Arguably best facility in B1G and world-class dive program. only thing that gets them an occasional 4th
I’d take an occasional 4th over never finishing above 6th.

He’s a used car salesmen. You made the right choice not going there.

Fixed, thanks
What does Swimswam have against Wisconsin? Not even mentioned in this article.
They’re mentioned 6 times….in every table….just like every other team.

Hmm, guess at least 4 people think its nothing.
