Bonnie Zhang Earns CAA Institutional Scholar-Athlete Award

RICHMOND, Va. — Bonnie Zhang has been selected as the 2019-2020 Institutional Female Student-Athlete for James Madison. Zhang will be graduating with a degree in accounting in May 2020.

The Canberra, Australia native currently holds an accumulative GPA of 3.727 while representing JMU on the swim & dive team. Zhang has earned a place on the JMU President list’s twice and the Dean’s list four times. She received recognition on the Colonial Athletic Association Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll three times, as well. In the Spring of 2019, Zhang was named a CSCAA Scholar All-American.

The senior sprint freestyle and backstroke specialist claimed the gold at the 2020 CAA Championships in the 200-yard freestyle event. Zhang was a member of the 400 freestyle relay team that secured the top of the podium at the championships. She broke the JMU and CAA record in the 100 free that she had previously set her junior season. The senior holds the school record in the 50-yard freestyle, 200-yard freestyle, 400 freestyle relay, 800 freestyle relay and 400 medley relay. Zhang is the second two-time qualifier for the NCAA DI Swimming and Diving Championships in the program’s history. The senior is an Australian Olympic Trial Qualifier as well.
