Swimming From Home: Bob Bowman on the Apples, Oranges, and Mangos of ASU

We are all trying to deal with the Covid-19 pandemic as best we can. Staying at home and not socializing is not an easy task for anyone, and keeping a swimmer out of the pool is equally antagonizing. Therefore, SwimSwam is starting the Swimming From Home Talk Show, where host Coleman Hodges speaks with the swimming community about how they’re coping with our current goggle-less reality.

Arizona State head coach Bob Bowman is one of the few coaches who is still able (or was at the time of this interview) able to coach his swimmers at a pool. Although all student-athletes of ASU were sent home, Bowman had a group of 6 post-grads that were still training, including Hali Flickinger, Allison Schmitt, and Giles Smith. Bowman explained why Giles was training in more of a mid-distance setting under Bowman, which led Bowman to explain how most of the ASU college team was broken up into apples, oranges, and mangos.

What does this have to do with….. Anything?

Maybe he likes being a bachelor. Maybe he doesn’t want to conform to societies “standards” of a “normal /successful life”.

He can do whatever he wants. With whomever he wants to spend his time with….

Did anyone else think it was weird that he calls Michael’s kids his grandkids? Good interview

I dunno man, been to a high school lately? Kids call their friends their “kids” and “mom.” This is way less weird than that. Especially given that Michael’s birth father was absent for most of his life.

Bob is single…Michael has had a relationship with bob for 20+ years. Those bonds don’t just break because Phelps stopped swimming. It makes sense (as Braden said) due to Michael not really having his own dad in his life.

I know it’s a sensitive topic, but 6 people in the size of the ASU pool/facility isn’t much of a risk. While not fair in the sense most swimmers do not have that opportunity, I don’t fault these guys for taking the opportunity and pushing forward.

Coleman Hodges

Coleman started his journey in the water at age 1, and although he actually has no memory of that, something must have stuck. A Missouri native, he joined the Columbia Swim Club at age 9, where he is still remembered for his stylish dragon swim trunks. After giving up on …
