The Virginia Tech H2Okies have added Spain’s Nadia Gonzalez to their incoming freshman class – the freestyler will start at Virginia Tech in the fall of 2020, provided the college school year begins on time.
Gonzalez is a strong freestyler and IMer who should be a big addition to a strong Virginia Tech recruiting class:

Gonzalez is the sister of Spanish Olympian Hugo Gonzalez, who also had a brief stint at Virginia Tech. Hugo swam for Virginia Tech head coach Sergio Lopez when Lopez was an assistant at Auburn, then planned to follow Lopez to Virginia Tech when Lopez took the head coaching job there. Hugo Gonzalez ultimately returned to Spain, then resurfaced with Cal.
Rough time conversions from Nadia Gonzalez’s long course bests would project short course times of 23.4/49.9/1:47.2 in freestyle. That would put her in last year’s ACC Championships B final in the 200 free and would have scored out of the C final in the 100 free.
More importantly, those projections would put Gonzalez solidly onto the H2Okies 800free relay last year. Their 800 free relay had legs of 1:47.9 and 1:46.5 on the front (both Loulou Vos and Sarah Shackelford return), but had a pair of 1:49s on the tail end. Gonzalez should also have a shot to join the 400 free relay, which graduates one leg from ACCs last year and had mostly 49-mid splits, with the exception of Shackelford’s 48.7.
Gonzalez joins a small-but-strong VT class that we had just ranked #13 in the nation. Already in that class are standout distance swimmer Chase Travis, backstroker Emma Atkinson and freestyler Kierstin Godfrey. Virginia Tech will also add standout backstroker Caroline Bentz, a top recruit from a year ago who deferred her collegiate enrollment for a year.
