Passafaro Overwrites Days Old Italian Age Record In 100 Free

REGIONAL CATEGORY CHAMPIONSHIP – CALABRIA

You can see the original SwimSwam Italia report here.

The various regional championships continue across Italy, with a yet another notable swim emerging, this time out of Calabria yesterday.

Competing in the men’s 14-year-old 100m freestyle final, David Passafaro took the title in a winning effort of 52.42. Not only is that a new lifetime best for the teen, but his mark also overwrites the days’ old Italian Age Record for 14-year-olds set by Lorenzo Galossi.

On August 4th, Lazio Region’s Galossi notched a new age record of 52.76 en route to winning his championship title. Now, Passafaro surpassed that newly-minted mark by .34 with his outing in Calabria.

Splits for Passafaro’s new 52.42 age record included 25.34/27.08, destroying his previous lifetime best of 56.12 from this same meet in 2019.

The President of the Calabrian Regional Committee Antonio Porcaro stated through the organization’s website:

“What is achieved is a result that starts from afar and rewards the commitment and work done even during a particular period by one of our athletes.

On behalf of the entire Committee, I congratulate Davide Passafaro, the technicians who trained and coach him. Good luck for the future.”

passafaro is 190 centimeters despite not yet 14 years old! but the best feature is his intellectual level. if you hear him speak without looking at him you think he’s 40! impressive!

Italian age records depend on the year each swimmer was born. Passafaro was born in 2006 like Galossi (a golden year for Italian Swimming?) but I’ve read that Passafaro was born on October, so he still would be 13 year-old (whilst Galossi was born at the end of May 2006, so he’s 14 and 2 months).
And as a 13 year-old his 52.42 in the 100 free LCM is even more impressive. Considering the data I know, only Chalmers (52.29 on April 2012, at 13 year and 9 months) was faster.
Jacob Whittle, for instance, swam a 53.59 as a 13 year-old.
Anyway, we’ll see what these amazing teens will be capable in the future.

52.4 aged 13 is just incredible. Italian swimming is on such an impressive trajectory at the minute.

Remember when Italy had the worst coronavirus infections in the world? They’ve come a long way in the last 16 years… wait, that was in 2020? That can’t be right – USA proved there’s no possible way to bring the virus under control.
