Winter Juniors Qualifier Jonik Surprenant Verbally Commits to Johns Hopkins

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Freestyle specialist Jonik Surprenant has announced his decision to swim at Division III Johns Hopkins University beginning in the fall of 2021. Surprenant swims year-round at Rockville-Montgomery Swim Club and is a rising senior at James Hubert Blake High School.

“I am very excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my athletic and academic career at Johns Hopkins University. I would like to thank all of my friends, family, teachers, coaches, and parents for supporting me along the way. Go Blue Jays!”

In February, Suprenant competed at the Maryland 4A3A State Championships in College Park, MD. He swam the 200 and 500 free, as well as 2 relays for James Hubert Blake High School. Surprenant placed 3rd in the 200 free, touching in a time of 1:43.33. He later swam the 500 free, touching second, 0.8 seconds behind Ziad Bandak of Winston Churchill High School. Surprenant’s time of 4:35.15 was a new personal best. He led off James Blake’s 200 free relay in a time of 22.48, and he was followed by Bochanrasmey Sam, Maxwell Troutman, and Aidan Dewey. Suprenant also swam the butterfly leg on the team’s 200 medley relay.

Last August, Surprenant competed at the NCSA Summer Swimming Championships, swimming the 200, 800, and 1500 free, and the 100 and 200 fly. He placed 18th in the 800 free, 20th in the 1500, 78th in the 100 fly, and 33rd in the prelims heats of the 200 fly. His 200 fly time of 2:08.78 earned him a spot in the D-final. In finals, Surprenant dropped 2.3 seconds to win the heat by 0.8 seconds. He earned personal best long course times in each event, qualifying for Winter Junior Nationals in the 200 fly and the 800 free.

Top SCY Times:

  • 200 free – 1:42.61
  • 500 free – 4:35.15
  • 1000 free – 9:29.07
  • 1650 free – 15:51.24
  • 200 fly – 1:51.92

When he joins the Johns Hopkins men’s swimming and diving team in the fall of 2021, Surprenant will be one of the team’s top distance swimmers. In the 2019-2020 season, his 1000 and 1650 free would have placed him as the second-fastest swimmer behind Christopher Arena, who will graduate in the spring of 2021.

Surprenant will be a member of Johns Hopkins University’s class of 2025.
