Ryan Hoffer of the Scottsdale Aquatic Club has broken his second National Age Group record of the weekend at the Federal Way Sectional Championship meet. In Sunday morning’s preliminary session, Hoffer swam a 20.08 to break his own record of 20.45 done in December at the Gulf Swimming Senior Championships in College Station, Texas. The record before he broke it was a 20.79 belonging to Kyle Bubolz in 2001.
This is Hoffer’s second record-breaking swim at the meet; on Thursday, he took down the 100 yard freestyle standard by swimming a 44.81.
He will be the second seed in tonight’s final behind Cal swimmer Tyler Messerschmidt, who was a 19.75 in prelims. Expectations on deck are that Messerschmidt will challenge for an 18-second result, so Hoffer will have both that wake and the ntimidation factor to cope with if he wants to break his record tonight.
I predict a 19.25 for Messerschmidt in the final. 🙂 Very fast. I sense he is nearly peaked.

My money is on a 19.20 (at least) from Tyler tonight.
Wouldn’t be suprised if Ryan goes sub 19.8 tonight. The kid is huge, and looks more like a 16-17 year old than a 14 year old.
Not your typical looking 14 year old. Dude is jacked and prob 6ft 3. Looks like most college D1 sprinters.
Neither was 20.08 for a 14 year before this morning.
Sorry, but Tyler is not going 18. 19.3 maybe. 18 is not in the realm of possibility.
Well, his best time is 19.37 from NCAA’s last year, where his 100 and 200 times were 42.78 and 1:35.04. Judging by his improvements in those events (42.32, 1:34.17), something around 19.1 shouldn’t be a surprise and that’s only 0.1 away from an 18.
There was an obvious touchpad error in the 200 free relay last night. If people are expecting that fast of a swim he must have gotten close on the leadoff.
Yeah, the officials explained that the pads were set to not register the touch until 19.00 seconds per 50 (for the kids who might hit the pad getting out of the pool). They said they didn’t think they would need to change that timer, but they said that since his hand touch didn’t register, it pretty much confirmed that he broke 19 in that leadoff.
