Northwestern Shatters Department’s Fall Academic All-Big Ten Record

EVANSTON, Ill. — Northwestern turned in a school-record 155 Fall Academic All-Big honorees, The . This is the third consecutive fall the Wildcats have bested their previous department record.

“Our student-athletes deserve tremendous credit for their unwavering commitment to academic excellence, especially in the midst of unprecedented circumstances,” said Combe Family Vice President for Athletics & Recreation Jim Phillips. “Their perseverance and dedication in every facet of the student-athlete experience is a direct reflection of the incredible group of Wildcats we have here and the entire University community is so proud of their accomplishments.”

The Wildcats’ 155 student-athletes from six varsity sports, topped the previous high of 127, which was set in the fall of 2019. The Northwestern women’s soccer (23) and volleyball (14) programs each earned the highest number of students in their respective sports to receive the honor.

Northwestern football tallied a program-record 69 honorees. This year marks only the third time that the program has exceeded 50 honored student-athletes in school history.

Field hockey had 17 recipients, which ranked second among Big Ten institutions. The program surpassed its 2019 total of 16 and etched a new high total since as far back as 2012. Northwestern men’s soccer was represented by 17 student-athletes.

This marks the second time since the award was established in 2008-09 in which all Northwestern fall sports have accrued double-digit recipients.

To earn Academic All-Big Ten distinction, an athlete must be in at least their second year at the institution and have a cumulative GPA of 3.0-or-better.

 The Office of Academic Services & Student Development plays a key role in ensuring that the athletic department succeeds in its mission of helping student-athletes perform well on the field and in the classroom.
