BYU Men & Women Earn Two Wins Apiece Against Air Force, Wyoming

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Cougars dominated against both Wyoming and the Air Force Academy in dual meets hosted by Air Force on Saturday, Jan. 16 in Colorado.

The BYU men’s team defeated Wyoming 157 to 83 while also defeating U.S. Air Force Academy 142 to 99, and the women also defeated Air Force 150 to 93 and Wyoming 146 to 96.

“That was the best performance we have had competing at Air Forces’ 7,280 feet elevation,” BYU head coach John Brooks said. “This is a tough place to swim fast and we did that.”

A team of Payton Plumb, Josue Dominguez, Javier Nicolas and Connor Stirling took the top time in the men’s 200 medley relay with a time of 1:28.54.  The four relay swimmers also went on to take the top time in their own individual events.

Stirling secured a first-place finish in the 50 free with a time of 20.27, Nicolas grabbed the top spot in the 100 fly at 48.59, Dominguez took first in the 100 breast with a 53.40 time and Plumb swam a 51.24 in the 100 back for the top spot.

Sophomore Tama Tuitama also took the top spot in two events recorded personal bests in the 200 free at 1:40.20 and in the 500 free with a time of 4:40.56.

The women also secured top times in multiple events including both relays. A team of Brynn Sproul, Katie McBratney, Charlotte Fieeiki and Gwen Gustafson recorded a 1:41.31 in the 200 medley relay while a team of Rachel Oyler, Emma Colvin, Tahis Ibanez and Gustafson grabbed the top spot in the 200 free relay at 1:34.21.

Besides her wins in the relays, Gustafson also won the 50 free at 23.01 while Sproul took the top spot in the 100 back at 55.20. McBratney also had wins in individual events including the 400 IM at 4:28.27 and the 100 breast with a 1:02.57.

BYU also secured wins in both diving events as Mickey Stauss finished the 3-meter with a 375.80 and Kennedy Cribbs had a 285.80 in the 1-meter.

The Cougars return home on Friday, Jan. 22 to compete against Colorado Mesa. The meet will begin at 4 p.m. MT at the Richards Building Pool.

Men’s Recap

USAFA, Colo. – The Air Force Academy men’s swimming and diving team split a tri-meet Saturday morning, Jan. 16, inside the Cadet Natatorium. The Falcons knocked off Western Athletic Conference rival Wyoming for the second straight day, 147-96, while falling to BYU, 142-99.

At the first break in the swimming action, the Falcons honored the four-man senior class of 2021. Recognized for their accomplishments at USAFA were Cole Armagost, Erik Orr, Brendan Richichi, and Vincent Vivadelli.

The three teams competed in 13 events on the day, with AF winning a pair of them. AF had a top-three -finish in 11 of the 13 events, including three runner-up finishes. Leading the way with the event wins were freshman Chris Lindley in the 1000 free, and junior Corey Shepard in the 100 free.

Air Force’s runner-up finishes were in both the relays, the 200 medley and 200 free, as well as an individual by junior Adam Grimm in the 400 IM. On the diving board, Armagost led the way with third place scores on both the 1-meter and 3-meter.

AF will be back in action Saturday, Jan. 30, for the annual Colorado Sprint Championships, hosted by the University of Denver. Action from the Mile High City is set to begin at 10 a.m. MT.

Women’s Recap

USAFA, Colo. – The Air Force Academy women’s swimming and diving team dropped both ends of a tri-meet Saturday afternoon, Jan. 16, inside the Cadet Natatorium. The Falcons fell to Mountain West rival Wyoming, 150-93, and BYU, 157-86.

“Our team is in a great place, we have been training hard and racing well,” Head Coach Colleen Murphy said. “I am so proud of the way they stepped up this weekend even though we were missing a few people. Our senior class got their job assignments on Friday and had a great weekend of racing!”

The three teams competed in 13 events on the day. The Falcons had one event win to go along with six other top-three finishes. Sophomore Sefilina Maile had the event win, clocking in with a 51.38 in the 100 free.

In the 100 fly, sophomore Allana Clarke took silver with an altitude-adjusted time of 56.05. It is the eighth-fastest time in Academy history, and the fifth quickest in the MW this season.

The Falcons had three other runner-up finishes, by senior Kylie Stronko in the 100 back, sophomore Mason Brown in the 100 breast, and the relay squad in the 200 medley.

AF will be back in action next Saturday, Jan. 23, for a dual with in-state and conference foe Colorado State. Action against the Rams is set to begin at noon. A senior day ceremony will take place before the start of the meet.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Jan. 16, 2021) – The Wyoming men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams wrapped up the weekend with duals against Air Force and BYU on Saturday in Colorado Springs. The Cowgirls earned 150-93 win over Air Force and dropped the contest 146-96 against the Cougars. The men dropped both its duals, 147-96, against Air Force and BYU, 157-83.

In the 200 freestyle relay, the team of Max DeYoung, Mitchell Hovis, Austin Crump and Grant Sloan placed fourth in a time of 1:32.65. The women placed third with a season-best time of 1:44.74 with Emily Giles, Rylie Pilon, Kira Crane, Sani Carsrud.

The 1000 free featured Harry Tjaden who went a career-best time of 9:59.74 to place second. Andrew Columbus posted a career-best time of 10:17.08. Sage Morton recorded a time of 10:46.31 to place second followed by Maggie Clerkin who touched the wall in 10:49.49.

Crump posted a time of 1:41.50 in the 200 freestyle. Ryan Netzel touched the wall 1:42.54 for a season-best time while Reilly Gilbert went 1:43.79. Katelyn Blattner placed first in the event with a season-best time of 1:50.35 while Lainee Jones was second with a season-best time of 1:51.87.

Sloan had the best time of 21.21 in the 50 freestyle for a fifth place spot. Kellen Chadderdon swam a career-best time of 22.09 followed by John Wargin with a time of 22.13. Kali Franckowiak was third in the event in a time of 23.91 while Crane recorded a mark of 23.98.

In the 400 IM, Thomas Diaz placed sixth in a time of 4:11.26. He was followed by Cameron Murphy who touched the wall in 4:16.21 and Luke Walker with a mark of 4:16.56. Erin Eccleston was third in a time of 4:37.06 followed closely by Roxanna Ramirez who posted a time of 4:39.65.

Gilbert was the top finisher in the 100 butterfly with a season-best 51.09. Tjaden went 51.12 and Hovis recorded a number of 51.62. Hannah Mclean-Leonard had the top time on the day touching the wall in 54.38

The 100 freestyle had Crump going 46.36 to place sixth. Jakob Borrman swam a career-best time of 47.79, while Chadderdon went 48.03. Carsrud posted the third best time, 52.15, while Kylee Theiler was behind her in fourth, 53.47.

In the 100 backstroke, the Cowboys went fifth, sixth and seventh. DeYoung was the top finisher in a time of 51.86. Browne followed with a mark of 52.03 and Andrew Rodriguez recorded a time of 52.38. Giles placed fifth with a time of 57.22.

Netzel posted a second place finish with a time of 4:43.72 while Daniel Cumnock-Francois and Walker went 4:45.84 and 4:46.86, respectively. Blattner posted her second first place finish with a time of 4:59.00.

Hovis finished second in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 56.12 while Wargin went 57.45 for a fifth place spot. Isabel Rich went 1:05.42 for a third place finish while Pilon was fifth in a time of 1:05.83.

In the final event for the men, the team of Sloan, Borrman, Chadderdon and DeYoung went a season-best time of 1:25.89 in the 200 freestyle. The team of Blattner, Franckowiak, Mclean-Leonard and Jones went 1:34.83 to finish second.

On the boards, three Cowboys placed in the top five of the 1-meter and 3-meter. Juan Gonzalez scored 317.30 in the 3-meter for a second place finish followed by a fourth place spot in the 1-meter with a score of 297.05. Brendan Byrnes was second in the 1-meter with a score of 302.05 while Elijah Chan completed his six dives with a combined score of 286.26. For the women, the top finisher was Melissa Mirafuentes who placed third in both events with scores of 281.20 and 247.30. McKenna Houlihan was four in the three meter with a score of 270.00 and fifth in the one-meter with a mark of 236.15.

Both squads will be back in the pool on Friday, January 22 against the Denver Pioneers. The meet is scheduled at 3 p.m. MT at the El Pomar Natatorium in Denver.
