After a big ISL season, Abbie Wood continues to get stronger in long course. The 22-year-old won the 200 free today in a lifetime best 1:57.96, edging 20-year-old Freya Anderson (1:58.00). It’s a huge best for Wood, who had an old best of 1:59.66 from February 2020.
James Guy had a strong 200 fly tonight, winning it in 1:56.34 off of a quick 53.89 first 100. He moves to #9 in the world this season, just .02 behind Japan’s Daiya Seto.
In the women’s 50 fly, French record-holder Marie Wattel won by a half-second, dropping a 25.51 ahead of Swedish sprinter Louise Hansson (26.05). Wattel was just a single hundredth off of her best, a 25.50 from the 2019 World Championships, a great February swim.
Thomas Dean led teenagers Matthew Richards and Jacob Whittle in the 100 free, all three breaking 50 seconds. Dean was 49.65 tonight, edging 19-year-old Richards (49.84) and 17-year-old Whittle (49.97). This morning, Whittle dropped a lifetime best 49.60.
Molly Renshaw followed up her British record-matching 200 breast last night (2:22.08) with a win in the 100 breast tonight. She was 1:07.38, with Sarah Vasey (1:07.76) and Imogen Clark (1:07.83) also getting under 1:08.
OTHER WINNERS
- Greek national Andreas Vazaios edged Joe Litchfield in the 200 IM, 2:01.54 to 2:01.63.
- 20-year-old Lily Booker destroyed her old best in the 400 IM, going 4:44.73 to take over five seconds off and breaking 4:50 for the first time.
- Jonathon Adam, 19, won the men’s 50 back in 26.30.
- Veteran Georgia Davies won the 100 back, going 1:01.96 to edge 18-year-old Honey Osrin (1:02.18).
Good swim from Guy. Really strong first 100 and toughed it out coming home. Hope that bodes well for his 200 free.
Abbie Wood looking good, excited for her 200 I’M. Have to think a sizeable PB is in the offing. Decent swim from Freya Anderson too.
Also good to see decent times from Imogen Clark and Sarah Vasey. Clark has had a rough time with injury the last couple of years, but she looked pretty good here with notably a strong finish.
So Adam didn’t eat anything today?
Au contraire. Adam is a snack every day.
Braden, can you please tell Coleman Hodges to bring the great Yannick Agnel to the podcast?
Accurate
Some great swims today, STANDOUT swim for me has to go to James Guy 1.56.3 in February!!
200 fre tomorrow should be great with him and Tom Dean!!
My thoughts on today:
Guy looking very good in the 200 fly, particularly first 100
Once Whittle gets his reaction time and underwaters sorted he will be a serious 100m freestyler on the world stage.
Tom Dean looks in very good physical shape – expecting impressive things from him this summer.
2.22 breast & 1.57 free are extremely impressive times for any IMer, but particularly as it was Abbie Wood’s front half that really stood out in the ISL. I’ll call a 2.09mid tomorrow, but she looks set to go a hell of a lot quicker than that in the summer.
Only other one I can see doing those times is Pickrem.
I’m really interested to see what happens at British Trials Women’s 200IM. Alicia Wilson had a big drop to go 2:11 in 2019 after her freshman year at Cal and her 200y & 400y IM have been steadily improving. But all her times are in yards and her last 200M IM was at 2019 WUGs. It should be a good show with Wood, Wilson, SMOC, Willmott and Miley
Abbie Wood is Also doing the 100 free tomorrow which should be interesting to watch.
