Event-by-Event Breakdowns & Predictions for the 2021 Men’s NCAA Championships

In the SwimSwam Podcast dive deeper into the sport you love with insider conversations about swimming. Hosted by Coleman Hodges and Gold Medal Mel Stewart, SwimSwam welcomes both the biggest names in swimming that you already know, and rising stars that you need to get to know, as we break down the past, present, and future of aquatic sports.

I sat down with SwimSwam writers and swimming aficionados Robert Gibbs and Karl Ortegon to discuss and predict every event in the upcoming 2021 Men’s NCAA Championships.
From a team perspective, it’s a 2-horse race. Texas and Cal look to be primed to have a battle for the title once again. There are many strong teams, but none have the top-end talent or depth to match the defending champions from 2019 (Cal) or the 4-time champions before that (Texas, 2015-2018).
From an individual standpoint, short course standouts like Kieran Smith and Shaine Casas will finally get a swing at multiple NCAA titles. We will also get to see how a lot of youngsters handle their second taper after blowing up at their conference meets.

The big question is will the fine folks at SwimSwam do a post-video comparing predictions to actual results?

There better be some walking boots on deck starting tomorrow I’m hoping to see some mind games from a couple guys in prelims.

I’m here for the downvotes. Hey, I gave Finke the mile, cut me some slack

I’m not sure Finke can hang on after going all in for SECs. My pick is David Johnston for the 1650, he’s been on a huge upswing this year and word on the street he’s grown 4 inches since Big 12s. Other than that it looks great!

Great picks, but I think Staka’s gonna give your 100 back pick a run for his money.

You & Horninco must be living side by side. Casas will set a record in that event & the 200 back as well👍

Are you huffing paint? Casas clearly tapered for the atm/kentucky dual last week, has a boot on both feet, a patch over his right eye, a cast on his left arm and has been at the Bearded Goat (look it up) every night this week. He won’t make it out of prelims. Sorry to burst your bubble

I think you switched around some digits on the 400 I’m. That should obviously be 3:31.24.
Other than I think you’ve been a bit hard on Texas. Have you taken into account that they swam through big 12s and they have to go through the eddie Reese taper. Pretty sure they will do better than your expectations.

Uhhh… ya honestly believe Shaine Casas is NOT gonna win any of his individuals? I know you’re a t-sip fan but let me know what world you are currently living/ existing in? It appears that you’ve got all t-sip swimmers taking each of his individuals🙃. Not worth the effort of me giving you a “down vote”👎. I’m not gonna put any of those 3 picks down because they all 3 are really good but to honestly believe each will pick off each of Casas’s individuals is a bit “looney” even for an elitist t-sip and/or t-sip fan🙃🙃. I didn’t realize that people are using the comment section as their “dream journal” but I admit I was wrong!! As my son… Read more »

Read my other comment, Casas won’t make it out of prelims. Texas finishes 1-2-3 in all events on Day 2 and the other teams withdraw. Olympic team? Please, Dressel is going to WD from trials when he sees Cole Crane and Luke Bowman on deck for the 100 Fly and 100 Free

I would also like to point out that I gave Finke the win in the mile. That’s an SEC team and by SEC bylaws that every SEC team gets to claim that as a win. See? I did give atm a victory! SEC! SEC!

Think your predictions are closer BUT would not bet against McHugh going 49.8 or Casas going 43,89

About Coleman Hodges

Coleman Hodges

Coleman started his journey in the water at age 1, and although he actually has no memory of that, something must have stuck. A Missouri native, he joined the Columbia Swim Club at age 9, where he is still remembered for his stylish dragon swim trunks. After giving up on …
