Six Names Added To Russian Olympic Team On Day 2 of Trials In Kazan

2021 RUSSIAN NATIONAL SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS

All six spots available for Tokyo qualification on Day 2 of the Russian Olympic Trials were filled, with the top-two finishers in all three Olympic-event finals getting under the FINA ‘A’ cut.

After no one made the team in the 400 IM on Day 1, the women’s roster got its four names added on Sunday in the 100 butterfly and 400 freestyle.

22-year-old Arina Surkova won the women’s 100 fly in a lifetime best of 57.54, and Anna Egorova (4:04.10) and Anastasia Kirpichnikova (4:06.26) also produced huge drops to make the team in the 400 free.

Egorova’s swim was also a new Russian Record, taking almost two seconds off the previous mark of 4:06.01.

Like Surkova, Egorova is 22, and Kirpichnikova is just 20.

Qualifying for her second Olympic team was 24-year-old Svetlana Chimrova, who claimed second in the 100 fly final in 57.83. The 100 fly national record holder (57.17), Chimrova placed 20th in Rio in the 100 fly, and also helped the Russian women to a sixth-place finish in the 400 medley relay.

On the men’s side it was Kirill Prigoda (59.11) and Anton Chupkov (59.47) going 1-2 in the 100 breaststroke to both get on the team for the second straight Games.

Prigoda placed 20th in the 100 breast at the 2016 Olympics, while Chupkov, despite not swimming the 100 breast individually, swam the breast leg on Russia’s fourth-place 400 medley relay after winning bronze in the 200 breast.

Through two days the roster already has 10 names on it after Ilya BorodinMaxim StupinMartin Malyutin and Alexander Egorov qualified on Day 1.
