Just a handful of events after 15-year-old Flynn Southam lowered his own Aussie national age record in the men’s 100m free, Isaac Cooper overtook an age record of his own in the 100m back.
17-year-old Cooper of Rackley just threw down a massive 100m back personal best of 54.56 to take the meet title. In doing so, Cooper’s time surpassed the previous age mark of 54.87 set by Alexander Graham back in 2013.
After establishing himself as the top-seeded swimmer of the morning with a heats swim of 57.01, Cooper unleashed splits of 26.07/28.49 to lock-in 54.56, his first-ever sub-55 second outing. Cooper’s previous PB rested at the 55.04 he logged just this past March.
For perspective, Cooper’s 54.56 would rank him as the 9th fastest 17-AND-18-year-old in U.S. history, sitting above the likes of Daniel Carr, Justin Ress and Drew Kibler.
Cooper also took the 50m free in his age category in 22.86 and is set to swim both the 100m free and 200m back.
Great swims tonight. Sam Short (age 17) did a 1.47.69 in 200 free too.
