21-year-old Lewis Clareburt is having a meet down in his native New Zealand. After already clinching an Olympic berth in the 400m IM with a new national record, as well as setting a new kiwi standard in the 100m free, the man checked in with a historic time in the 200m IM.
Competing on the final day of these New Zealand National Championships, Clareburt churned out big-time 200m IM time of 1:57.89. That not only checked in as a new lifetime best for the Capital Swim Club athlete, but it crushed the previous national record of 1:59.24. That result was performed by Bradlee Ashby at the 2017 FINA World Championships.
Splits for Clareburt’s 1:57.89 head-turner were as follows:
Post-race, Clareburt stated, “I knew I had it in me, I just had to piece it together nicely.”
Looking at all-time Oceanic performers in this 2IM, Clareburt now checks-in at slot #5, representing the first non-Aussie to join the exclusive upper echelon.
