For the first time since 2019, the CIF San Diego Section Championships ran a few days ago, as The Bishop’s School won the boys meet and University City the girls meet in Division II. This meet was initially canceled then shortly after reinstated due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

University City and Cathedral Catholic went head-to-head on Monday, with the University City girls scraping by on a two-point margin.

The two teams duked it out from the get-go, as UV won the 200 medley relay, 1:47.77 to CC’s 1:47.90.

Kathryn Hazle was a star for UC, posting a huge victory in the 500 free. Her winning time of 4:53.56 put her over ten seconds ahead of any other finisher, while her teammate Sophie Ryan was runner-up at 5:05.72. Hazle also anchored UC’s winning 400 free relay with a 51.30, as they were able to hold off CC in the final relay.

For CC, Kathryn Lundh led the way, going 56.03 to win the 100 fly and taking second in the 50 free (24.02).

Ava Delaney contributed two of La Costa Canyon’s three individual wins, sweeping the sprints. She out-touched UCLA commit Lundh in the 50 free (24.00) before racing to the 100 free win (52.42), while her teammate Noelle Harvey surged for the 200 free victory. Harvey was 1:49.45, able to take down Hazle’s 1:49.66. In the 200 free relay, Harvey and Delaney powered them to the win at 1:38.91, the only team under 1:41.

Arielle Brotman, a freshman at La Jolla, picked up two wins. She was 2:01.47 in the 200 IM and 1:02.42 in the 100 breast, making for an impressive high school debut. The other individual winner on the day was Mt. Carmel’s Delaney Alonso, another freshman, who was 55.95 in the 100 back. She just touched out Harvey (56.19).

Lucius Brown kicked off The Bishop’s School’s winning campaign with a huge 19.70 anchor leg on their 200 medley relay, as they were able to hold off Classical Academy, who had a 19.86 anchor from USC commit Mateo Parker. TBS won in 1:34.14, ahead of Classical Academy’s 1:34.85.

The two would square off in the 50 and 100 free, but it was Parker who claimed both wins, going 20.15 in the 50 and 44.65 in the 100.

They’d have their final battle on the 400 free relay, but despite Parker’s blazing 43.87 anchor, TBS comfortably took the win at 3:09.62 to Classical Academy’s 3:11.22. Brown, a Yale commit, was 44.93 on the end for TBS.

TBS’s other win came in the 200 IM, where Greyson Davies took the victory by almost two seconds at 1:53.53.

OTHER WINNERS

• Mt. Carmel’s Mason Amble took the 200 free at 1:41.99.
• La Jolla Country Day School got on the map with a win from Jerry Zhou in the 100 fly (49.68).
• In the 500 free, Nathan Paiz of Valley Center was 4:42.04 to win by over four seconds.
• Sage Creek swam to the 200 free relay win with a 1:27.34 to blow away the field by almost two seconds.
• Samuel Quarles of Coronado posted a 51.09 to claim the 100 back.
• Christian High School’s Ian Mullen snuck in for the 100 breast win at 58.53.
