The Scottsdale Aquatic Club women and the Austin Swim Club men maintained the leads they had going into the final day of Des Moines site of the 18&& Spring Cup meet, while several swimmers added to their event win totals on the final day as well.
On the men’s side, Lakeridge’s Luke Hobson a Texas commit, won his 3rd event of the week with a 50.24 in the 100 free, getting under the Olympic Trials Wave I cut. Hobson had previously won the 200 free and the 400 free earlier in the week. 16 year-old Jonathan Kulow of Lander Swim Club took 2nd with a 50.60. Hobson also won the 800 free with a 8:18.66, giving him the sweep of the 100-800 freestyle events over the course of the meet.
Schroeder YMCA’s Ziyad Saleem finished off the backstroke sweep with a 2:02.26 win in the 200 back this evening, under the Wave II cut of 2:02.99. Saleem won the 100 back yesterday, and will be heading to Cal next year, where he’ll be training with one of the top backstroke groups in the country.
Tyler Lu of the Seattle Metropolitan Aquatic Club just snuck under the Wave II cut in the 200 IM to. The Northwestern commit touched in 2:04.06, just 0.03s under the standard to earn his only win of the meet.
On the women’s side, Sunday evening opened up with a tight race in the 100 free, where Scottsdale’s Ashley Strouse ran down Austin Swim Club’s Malia Rausch to win, 56.65 to 56.71. Later in the evening Rausch would win the 200 IM by exactly two seconds, touching in 2:15.46, under the Wave I cut and just 0.20s off of the Wave II cut, while Strouse also earned 2nd in the 1500m free with a 16:51.89. Raush had also won the 200 free earlier in the meet.
Reno’s Emma Karam won the 200 back with a. 2:14.35, one of a trio of 16 year-olds who took the top three spots. The 2022 UNC commit had also taken 2nd in the 100 back last night. UNC commit for 2022. Aurora Roghair of the Iowa Flyers closed things out with a Wave I cut of 16:48.56 in the 1500 free, to go along with her 400 free victory earlier in the meet.
