Michael Andrew Breaks US Open Record in 100 Breaststroke – 58.67

2021 PRO SWIM SERIES – INDIANAPOLIS (#4)

After swimming a new personal best of 58.82 in the 100 breaststroke during prelims to become the second-fastest American in history, Michael Andrew broke his first US Open record during finals at the Pro Swim Series in Indianapolis.

Andrew won the event with a time of 58.67 to chop just under a tenth of a second off of the US Open Record of 58.74, which was held by both Kevin Cordes and Yan Zibei. His time also came within .03 of Cordes’ American Record of 58.64, which was set at the 2017 World Championships.

Split Comparison:

Michael Andrew 2021 PSS-Indy Finals Michael Andrew 2021 PSS-Indy Prelims Yan Zibei 2019 Meet of Champions
Kevin Cordes 2017 US Nationals
First 50 27.32 27.45 27.84 27.63
Second 50 31.35 31.37 30.9 31.11
Total 58.67 58.82 58.74 58.74

Compared to his prelims swim, Andrew was out over a tenth of a second faster, which ultimately proved to be the difference as his back-half splits were almost identical.

Andrew’s time also set a new Pro Swim Series record, taking down his mark from the prelims session. He remains the second-fastest American all-time and now moves to 4th in the world for this season.

How’s his relay start? I imagine it might be quite weak given he hasn’t participated in many given h.is solo training, but then again it’s not super complicated. Might make a difference on the medley relay if he splits 58.0 vs 58.6.

Well Dressel’s isn’t that great, so it’s obviously not how many relays you’ve swum.

Smh would’ve broken the AR if SwimSwam didn’t make him the cover photo

You know that’s right. He makes me both hopeful and worried if he is the br leg on the 4 x 1 med bc he could go (and i know it’s controversial take but he can still improve and it’s a relay) 57.9 or he could go 1:00
