Two of the world’s major IPC swimming nations, the Brits and the Canadians, have announced their rosters for the upcoming IPC World Championships that are to be held in Montreal, Canada.
The UK will send a roster of 32 as they try and follow up on their staggering 39 Paralympic medals from their home Games last summer. That includes Ellie Simmonds, who competed in her first World Championships in 2007 when she was only 12 years old. She is arguably one of the five most famous active British swimmers right now at any level after a huge Paralympic marketing push in 2012.
Also on the squad is 14-year old Amy Marren. Last year, she swam three Olympic events with mixed success, but couldn’t crack a loaded British S9 lineup in the 200 IM (they went 2-3-4 at the Paralympics). Already in 2013, though, she’s broken the European Record in the event, and now will ride to her first World Championships.

As for the Canadians, who also had a solid Paralympics with 16 total medals (4 of them gold), the team this year will be without one star, Summer Mortimer who won four medals in London in the S10 classification, but still returns many of their stars.
That includes 29-year old veteran Benoit Huot, who has been to four Paralympic Games and won 19 total medals there. Brianna Nelson, who had the unfortunate task of being squared up against legendary Australian S7 swimmer Jacqueline Freney at the Paralympics but still walked away with a pair of silver medals, has also made the roster.
This Canadian IPC World Championships roster has a decidedly different geographic feel than does its FINA counterpart. Whereas the FINA World Championship roster leans heavily toward the western half of the country, this IPC squad has 9 Quebecois, more than even British Columbians. With the meet being hosted in Quebec, that will give them an even greater home-field advantage.
