It was really great watching Ryan Lochte win that 100 Fly B Final. All that cheering and excitement, kinda made it feel like an A Final.
Is Greg Troy warm to and all good with a reality TV show in the deck in Gainesville? The tyranny, the yelling, the inspired catch phrases, the positive reinforcement words after a nice 11,500 meter set, the morning coffee, the dinner plans. E! would be psyched!
There have been a number of swimmers who have taken these type of breaks and some have came out better, some have regressed and some have plateaued. In the case of our sport, can you blame some of our top swimmers in trying to make a living and ‘cash in’ with endorsement opportunities and increase their name outside of the sport?
I can’t and I think some of us need to remember that there are still very limited opportunities to ‘cash in’ and actually make some money outside of the swimming bubble that we live in.
I know that in the ideal world, being able to balance one’s training cycle and business interests would be easier but until… Read more »
Good to see Lochte finally getting some real work in (not that he wasn’t during his post-Olympic media storm, but I’m sure it wasn’t where he needed it to be). But, given that, without any training he should still be a total lock for at least 2 events (200 IM, 800 Free Relay) just by virtue of showing up tapered and putting on a suit. And everything else he swims (200 Free individual, 200 back, 100 fly, 100 back) he has a shot at.
I personally don’t see the problem with Lochte taking some time off to pursue his own interests. I know some here want these people be be full-time swimmers, but things like this are healthy. Phelps took six months off after Beijing and that worked out well for him for the most part. There are Lochte haters out there (some even saying his London performance was a failure), but he should do whatever makes him happy.
If you want to have a long career you need a few breaks. MP and his coach had understood that really well.
Philip, If I recall correcly, Lotche himself was not happy with his London perfomance,, he was expecting a Phelps Like perfomance, and his decision to focus on too many events backfired..
Lochte said he was overall pleased with his performance although based on his times in 2011, he could’ve done better. Still, 2 golds, 2 silvers, and a bronze is better than 95% of the swimmers competing so I don’t understand why people were so critical of him. did the media play him up? yes. did he play himself up? probably yes. was it smart to compare himself to Phelps? no. But still, i thought his performance in London was still pretty good.
I think his amazing was very good, but no so good if you compare to the expectations and the comparison to Phelps..
Well said Ryan : if u don’t get back into the pool , hard to make it to Barcelona …. but hopefully he will make it .
